Steven Kelly Gibbs (known as Steven to family, and Bamm Bamm to friends), age 48, of South Mills, NC, died at Sentara Norfolk General on Monday, March 31, 2025. Born in Elizabeth City, NC on April 1, 1976, to the late Milton "Gibby" Gibbs and Connie Jones Gibbs, he was the husband of 10 years to Cristin Carlisle Gibbs.
Steven attended Northeastern High School where he played football. Although he did not graduate from there, he was able to get his GED and get certified as a welder at College of the Albemarle. He also had his CDL. All those accomplishments brought him much pride, but none compared to his love of family and friends. Steven was fiercely loyal to those he loved. Even during his health struggles, he was more concerned about his wife's future. He made great effort to keep up with friends from his youth and to build new friendships along the way. Steven did not have a lot, but he had surrounded himself with people who loved him. His too short life can hardly be summed up in only a few sentences. He loved the Lord and discussing Him would bring him to tears. He was a sucker for any animal, a quality which he got from his Mama. Steven's life consisted of tender moments with his wife and family, with just as many equally frustrating ones. Even while reluctantly working through Cristin's list of projects, he found joy in pleasing his wife with the end results or joining her on her thrifting trips, even though he would rather be anywhere else. He struggled with anger, love, and compassion simultaneously, yet it was impossible not to love him through them all. He enjoyed driving tractors, cruising the roads on his motorcycle, taking day trips to Hatteras, sitting on the beach, and eating good food.
In addition to his wife, Cristin, Steven is survived by his daughter, Shyanne Carlisle; his son, Matthew McLeod; his stepson, Joshua Parks; three older sisters, Suzy Gibbs, Pam Keaton (Don Lee) and Beverly Blocker (Dwayne); nephews, Cody (Paige), Gage (Jamie), Grant, and Gavin; nieces, Jordan (David) and Anna (Cameron); great-nieces and great-nephews, and his beloved cat, Moo-Moo. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at South Mills Church of Christ, 100 Culpepper Road, South Mills, NC 27976. This will be an informal event, just as Steven would have wanted.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to assist with funeral costs and other medical expenses can be made in person at the Celebration of Life, at any Atlantic Union Bank, sent via Zelle to [email protected], or mailed to Atlantic Union Bank, 1145 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Checks should be made payable to Cristin Carlisle, and the check memo should reference memorial donation for Steven Gibbs.
