Steven Bruce Wallach died on April 27, 2025. Born in the Bronx in 1947 to Jack and Evelyn Wallach, Steve had made Austin his home since 1993.
An alumnus of Texas State University and the University of Texas, Steve was a lifelong learner with a passion for history and politics. He had a varied working life that included driving a taxi in New York, managing several retail stores and restaurants, selling used cars, working as a handyman and a baker, and owning a retail shipping business on Guadalupe Street, The Packaging Store. Some of the favorite memories of his younger siblings and oldest niece and nephew were of working at the restaurant he owned in Santa Fe in the 1980s, Bagel and Lombard.
Later in life, Steve became a special education teacher and taught at Travis and Akins high schools. He was very active in Education Austin during his career, and he retired from AISD in 2016.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Steve loved watching movies and television, listening to music, writing songs, and reading. But most of all, Steve loved talking about his hobbies with his family members and was happiest when they joined him.
Steve leaves behind his wife, Julie Ward, and their sons and daughter-in-law, Daniel Wallach, and Jaxon Wallach and Rebekah Brown. He is also survived by his sister Robin Rudell and her husband Rick; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Harvey and Esther Wallach of New Jersey, Brian and Susan Wallach of North Carolina, and David and Colleen Wallach of New Mexico; and several nieces and nephews.
Steve's family would like to thank Rabbi Kelly Levy of Congregation Beth Israel for conducting a lovely memorial service for him.
