Stewart Hewlett Obituary

Stewart Clawson Hewlett, beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother and Friend, passed away unexpectedly at IMC in Murray, Utah on October 21, 2025 at age 70.

Stewart was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 18, 1955 to Charles Stewart Hewlett and Barbara Clawson. He had 5 amazing brothers who were lifelong friends.

He married Kathryn Despain on March 30, 1983 in the Salt Lake Temple. She preceded him in death on November 18, 2002. He then married Kimberlee Lloyd on May 8, 2004 in the Salt Lake Temple.

Stewart and Kathy had 5 children, 3 sons and 2 daughters. He and Kim were blessed to bring 2 more daughters to the family. He loved his kids!

Stewart was an avid reader, walker, golfer and sports fan. He especially followed the Green Bay Packers, Atlanta Braves and his beloved Utah Utes. Stewart was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings throughout his life. He served a two-year mission in the Thailand Bangkok mission in the 1970s and was able to return there once again in 2016. His service among the people in Thailand was among his proudest. He was currently serving as a temple worker at the Draper Utah Temple, though his favorite responsibility was Stake Athletic Director, where he made many lifelong connections.

His father Charles encouraged him at a young age to become a Sports Official. This became a lifetime pursuit, officiating basketball at all age levels and skills including High School and Salt Lake County Recreation Basketball.

Stewart graduated from Highland High School and then attended the University of Utah before teaching Spanish at Eastmont Middle School in Sandy. Incredibly, while working full-time and raising a young family, he continued his education, earning a Masters Degree from Brigham Young University.

He impacted around 6,000 and 7,000 students during his 30-year teaching career. Señor Hewlett, as he was affectionately known by his students, was firm but caring, expecting a lot from his students. Even years later, his family has regular encounters with strangers who, making the connection, recall their love for Señor Hewlett.

One of his favorite places to be was at the family ranch in Pine Valley, where he worked for over 20 years building his family's cabin, which they will cherish forever as a gathering place.

Stewart was also passionate about coaching community teams for more than 30 years. He was involved in coaching his children's soccer teams and also the Eastmont Boys 9th grade Basketball team. Even with his busy schedule, his kids don't recall him ever missing one of their games.

The family is deeply grateful for the care given by many doctors and nurses in the Thoracic ICU.

Stewart is survived by Kimberlee (wife), sons Ryan (Maggie), Michael (Chelsey), Justin, daughters Katie (Collin) Prisbrey, Megan (Chris) Merrill, Kennadee and Aubree; grandchildren Ethan, Adrian, Ava, Brooks, Blake, Cash, Asher, Eliza, Shad, Hudson, Owen, Jade, Cooper, Calvin and Benson.

Stewart is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Barbara, wife, Kathryn, brother, Chuck Hewlett and sister-in-law, Jeannette Hewlett.

Stewart was never one to put emphasis on titles, accolades or material possessions. By most outward measures, he was an ordinary person who did the simple things consistently. He was focused on his faith in Christ, his relationships with others and the impact he could have through personal connection. Stewart will be remembered as a gentle man, a friend who cared more about others than himself. His children will be forever grateful for his example of persistent hard work and dedication.

A viewing for Stewart will be held on Friday, October 24th from 7-9 PM at Larkin Sunset Gardens (1950 East Dimple Dell Road, Sandy) and on Saturday October 25th from 9:30 to 10:45 AM, followed by his funeral service at 11 AM at the Crescent Ridge 3rd Ward building (10975 South Prescott Drive, Sandy).

Interment will be at Larkin Sunset Gardens.
