Sun Ja Choi, 83, of Raleigh, North Carolina passed away peacefully at her home in the early morning hours of June 11, 2023. Sun and her identical twin sister, Gum Ja, were born on July 5, 1939 as the second and third children of Chae Dol Soo and Moon Sam Nee. Although her family was Korean, she and her twin sister were born when their family lived in Imperial Japan. Her family emigrated to Korea in the early 1940s, where they settled in the coastal town of Yosu, and where her two younger brothers were born. After emigrating to the United States, Sun became a naturalized US citizen on February 19, 1982.
Sun spent the majority of her career performing diagnostics and repair of printed circuit boards in the telecommunications industry. Until her retirement from Northern Telecom (Nortel) in 2000, she worked cheerfully and tirelessly to create a successful life for herself and her family, both in the United States and in Korea. In addition to being a devoted, loving, and attentive mother and grandmother, Sun was a faithful member of Raleigh Korean Presbyterian Church, where she enjoyed the fellowship of many dear and lifelong friends. She was also an avid gardener.
Sun is survived by her son, Hunt, and his wife, Anna, of Raleigh, North Carolina; her grandson, Caswell and her granddaughter Jane.
Services will be held at 7:30 pm on Friday, June 16, 2023 at Raleigh Korean Presbyterian Church, 5408 Duraleigh Road, Raleigh, NC 27612. A reception will immediately follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Raleigh Korean Presbyterian Church in Sun's Honor.

Our family is saddened Sun Ja has passed. Although not related we were friends and lovingly called her "Mama Choi".  She was quite beautiful and always was so glad to see any of us. She was always busy working in her garden and of course trying to feed us when we visited. We love her family very much and know she was so very proud of them all. She will be busy watching over every detail. She loved you so. MC you will be missed.  Cynthia, Victor, Dylan and Sean
