Susan E. Algire

Susan (Swank) Algire, age 76, of Fredericktown, passed away Sunday, August 11, 2024, at Riverside hospital surrounded by family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, John D. & Eulalah (Euke) Swank of Fredericktown, and brother William (Bill) Koser of Mansfield and sister Cathy Tier of Mt. Vernon.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Ronald L. Algire, daughters Jodi (Brian) Winkler, Jacki Algire, Juli (Chad) Fogt, granddaughter Megan (Andrew) Yoder, and great-grandson Benny Yoder.
She spent many years following her girls around to volleyball, basketball & softball games, and track meets, and was always their biggest fan, and LOUDEST cheerleader.
Animals, and horses especially, always featured heavily in Susan's life. She grew up on a farm with them and showed both cattle and horses in 4-H as a kid.
When she married Ron, she became involved in the breeding of Percheron draft horses for 20+ years, and later of Percheron/Welsh American Draft Ponies.
Susan was a passionate advocate for the youth of Knox County, having co-created and served as an advisor to the Farming Friends 4-H club, and the Knox County Draft Horse and Pony 4-H club.
She was a longstanding member of the Farm Bureau, a founding member of the Central Ohio Draft Horse Association, lifetime member of the Ohio Percheron Breeder's Assn. and the Percheron Association of America. When the draft ponies entered their life, Susan and Ron became members of the Northern Ohio Draft Pony Assn. where she served many years as sale chairman running their annual pony auctions, and as show secretary/treasurer for the Ohio Draft Pony Assn. which oversees the Ohio State Fair draft pony show.
Even as her health declined after back surgery, she continued to go to as many shows & activities as possible. She thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship and friendships made at Draft Horse/Pony shows, chicken barbecues, and association meetings.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, August 19, 2024, from 5:00 pm until the time of a celebration of life service starting at 7:00 pm at the Snyder Funeral Home in Fredericktown, 33 E. College Street, Fredericktown, Ohio, 43019.
