Susan Kay Epperson was born on December 24, 1944, to parents Helen and Forrest Foster in Austin, Texas. She was the “youngest” of identical twins, her twin sister, Caroline Allen.
Susan attended school in Austin, her parents moving them to Ft. Worth before her senior year, graduating from Pascal High School in Ft. Worth, Texas. She attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas for a year, entering the workforce.
Susan worked for the Texas Auto Insurance Plan Association (TAIPA) for 48 years. At her retirement in October 2011, she was awarded by the State of Texas House of Representative, Honorable Mark Strama with a special plaque, encased with the State Flag of Texas flown over the State Capital, and state documents honoring her long, faithful service.
Susan died on March 6 at St. David’s South Austin, surrounded by her husband, daughter, sisters, and niece.
Susan and Reverend Alvin Epperson were married on September 6, 1990, moving from Austin to McDade, Texas in 1992 where Alvin was called and served a 2-point parish (St. John Lutheran Church in Paige and Faith Lutheran in McDade). They lived in the McDade countryside for almost 34 years.
Susan was loved by the members of the churches Alvin served, especially by the congregation she and Alvin have been members of since 2010 – New Hope Lutheran Church of McDade, a mission congregation of the L.C.M.C. As a “pastor’s wife”, she is the best wife any pastor could have had. Susan loved Christ and His True Church, and God’s living Saints.
Susan was preceded in death by her grandparents on her mother’s side (Vorwerk) and father’s side (Foster). Also, her parents, many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Susan was also preceded in death by their son, Troy Mikel Epperson, in May of 1998.
She is survived by her husband of almost 36 years, Reverend Alvin Epperson, twin sister Caroline Allen (David) from Huntingburg, Indiana and her 3 children, stepchildren and grandkids; Sister Barbara Beery (Bobby) of Austin and their 3 children and grandkids.
Susan is also survived by their children – son, Trent Epperson (Johnna) and their children, Dr. Ryan Epperson, and Emily Epperson, graduate of Notre Dame and 3rd year dental student of Pearland in Houston., and daughter Tara Stromberg (Austin) and her children, Troy – freshman at San Diego State and Noah, freshman at Bowie High School.
Susan Kay was a gift from God and especially loved by her family and her grandchildren.
Special thanks to Pastor Ryan Grube and his many visits, pastoral care, words, prayers, and the Sacrament of Holly Communion while Susan was in Memorial Hermann Hospital, South Houston, The Towers Nurse-Rehab Center, Smithville, and St. David’s Hospital, South Austin since January 3. Also, thanks to Pastor Caleb Williams for his visits to us in Houston and Austin.
And to all of you for your prayers, love, calls, and visits to both Susan and I during this long walk through the Valley the Shadow of Death and Loss.
The Victory is Susan’s through the Firstborn of the Dead, The Risen Christ. “For All the Saints, Alleluia!”
