Susan ("Susie") Elizabeth Gregory left this earth January 17, 2025, while at home, surrounded by her loving family after a fierce 6-year battle with cancer. Susie joins her parents, the "crazy game ladies", a brother who passed in infancy, and a handful of "furry kids", (Tudley, Elizabeth, Rufus, Cubby, Rake, Nellie, Ruby) in heaven, where we have no doubt she was welcomed with open arms (and paws), love, and laughter.
Susie was born July 7, 1945, in Hammond, IN., to Dr. Harry and Norma Ludwick. She graduated from Purdue University (Go Hoosiers!) with a degree in nursing and worked at the VA Hospital, where she met the love of her life, best friend, and partner in everything, David (Dave) L. Gregory, M.D. They shared their first date on August 9th,1970; became engaged January 9th, 1971; and were married February 20th, 1971. You can bet they celebrated each anniversary for the nearly 54 years they shared on this earth. Their love story is epic and they always set the bar high, living and loving by example; often referred to as "The G.O.A.T" or "The Institution" (as Big O would say).
Our Beautiful Badass Matriarch Warrior leaves behind her loving husband, David, her daughters, Jennifer Gregory and Shannon (Boogie) Garvey; son-in-law, Greg Garvey; daughter-in-law, Christy (Schroer) Gregory; son, Jason Gregory and 5 "grands" whom she was over-the-moon proud of; Will (Gregory), Matilda (Carr), Lucy (Gregory), Oliver (Carr) and Joe (Garvey); daughter-in-faith, Jennifer ("Jiffy") Baker; God-son, Matt Chadwick; her "furry daughter", Waveland Gregory (Go Cubs!); many honorary kids and grands who are like family (you know who you are), as well as countless friends and family who will miss her dearly.
Aside from her unwavering positivity, strength and generosity, Susie was well known for her work as an award-winning artist and touched so many with her amazing talent. She was featured at many galleries throughout the country and it wasn't uncommon for a friend who had lost a pet to unexpectedly receive a painting in the mail to commemorate their loved one. Susie was an exceptional golfer, travelling with her Davey to play some of the most beautiful courses in the world and racking up an unbelievable 3 holes-in-one. She was an unrivaled IU fan, famously known for enthusiastically yelling at the refs, smooching Bobby Knight, and creating many IU paintings, including The Resurrection, The WAT Shot, IU legs and IU Santa. Susie's musical talents were always on display, whether singing (often the first call to sing "Happy Birthday"), humming, misquoting song lyrics or playing almost effortlessly on her baby grand piano. She always took requests.
Susie's Christmas spirit and peanut brittle are legendary and she is well known to many generations as the scariest witch in the neighborhood. Susie kept sharp with her "brainwork"; crosswords, Sudoku, Jumble, our own "word of the day" (frequently frustrating us by already knowing the answer as we tried to stump her), and, of course, endless rounds of Rummikub (invariably citing "my good friend Katie" at least once during the game).
To the very end, Susie's love for her family and friends, as well as her faith, were truly unparalleled, and we all felt it every day. And like the beautiful spirit of this amazing woman, our love for her will never die.
In keeping with the family's request, cremation has taken place and a memorial gathering will be held Saturday, February 1, 2025 at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. There will be no formal funeral service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
A celebration of life is planned for the spring and Susie's family is creating a Susie Gregory Memorial Golf Tournament & Scholarship – details to follow.
Condolences and special memories may be shared with Susie's family and a video tribute may be viewed at barkesweaverglick.com.

To my friends and ex-next door neighbors. Suzie was awesome! Such a great influence on me and she will forever be in my thoughts especially during Halloween. While I was closest to Boogey and Jason, I knew loved and respected you all.

I actually brought my son to the neighborhood when he was pretty young, but Suzie was there and we had a good long chat before moving on to find more candy. I don´t know if that was the last time I interacted with her, but I remember it and was so proud to show off my baby boy to her.

I hope you all can find peace. I know she will be sorely missed by everyone who was lucky enough to know her.

Wish I had some pictures to share.

From your friends at Tri-State Artisans, we will miss you terribly. You were always a bright spot in the gallery and were unfailingly cheerful. Your legacy to the art world is immense. Rest well Susie.

Remembered her as Madison School classmate in South Bend in the late '50s. Leeper Park was in her back yard as they lived on Park Ave in South Bend.
