Susan L. Tatar, age 80, of Spring Green, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at her residence after a short battle with cancer. Born on May 15, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of Frederick and Hilda (DeHart) Scholler.
Sue was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and community member. She graduated from Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Health, Physical Education, and Spanish, and later earned a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from National Lewis University. During her career as a school teacher, she was a proud member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an organization embracing excellence in education and leadership. It was at Illinois State University that she met her beloved husband, Joseph, with whom she shared 58 years of marriage and raised 3 loving sons.
Sue's vibrant spirit and love for storytelling made her a beloved figure in her community. From a young age, she was drawn to social activities and sharing stories, passions that carried through her life. She served as Education Director for the Elgin Public Museum, was active in numerous community organizations including 4PetesSake, Friends of the Spring Green Library, and the Sauk County Master Gardeners. Her dedication also extended to volunteering for the community food pantry, election officials, and church activities, often accompanied by her mother Hilda who helped instill the spirit of service. As a member of Christ Lutheran Church, she found strength and purpose through her faith. She also loved American Players Theater, often going to multiple plays per year and enjoying picnics with her family beforehand.
She loved spending time with her grandchildren, Nathaniel, Zachary, Lucas, Adelyn, Oliver, Bennett, Isaac, and Jacob, treasuring every moment together. Her passions included traveling, particularly trips out West and to Europe, gardening, and holiday celebrations such as Halloween and Day of the Dead. Her gift for telling stories, mastery of the Midwest goodbye, vibrant colors, and thoughtful giving left a lasting impression on all she encountered. Her love of connecting with people often manifested itself in feeding people, typically with more food than anyone could ever reasonably consume.
Preceded in death by her parents Frederick and Hilda Scholler, her brother Bruce Scholler (Sally), and her granddaughter Judith Tatar. Sue is survived by her husband Joseph; her children Anthony (Heidi), Andrew (Jennifer), Joseph II (Raquel) and her grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 21 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Spring Green, WI. Pastor Jackie Harvestine will officiate with burial at Big Hollow Lutheran Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the church. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 20 from 4:00 - 6:30 PM at Christ Lutheran Church and again on Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to 4PetesSake or Friends of the Spring Green Library, honoring her lifelong dedication to community service and education.
Sue's loving presence, joyful spirit, and dedication to her family and community will be forever cherished. Her legacy of kindness, service, and inspiration will continue to brighten our lives.
