Susan M. O'Neill, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away at 8:45 pm on Saturday, October 11, 2025, in Memorial Hospital. Born on October 20, 1948, in South Bend, Susie's life was a tapestry of love, dedication, and joy that touched all who knew her.
Susie's journey began as the beloved daughter of the late Charles D. and Mary Lu (Quimby) Whiting, Jr. She grew up in a nurturing home alongside her brother, the late Chuck Whiting III. Her early years in South Bend were filled with the laughter and camaraderie that would become the hallmark of her life.
A 1967 graduate of Clay High School, Susie's youthful exuberance was matched only by her love for bowling, a passion that brought her much joy and companionship. It was in the halls of her middle school where she met her lifelong love, Pat O'Neill. Their friendship blossomed into love, and they were united in marriage on November 9, 1968. Pat, her devoted husband, survives her, marking nearly six decades of shared memories since their serendipitous meeting in the 7th grade.
Susie's family was her pride and joy. She was a loving mother to her daughter, Jenny (Steve) Dobbs, and adored her granddaughter, Samantha (Kooper) Reppert, whose achievements and milestones were a constant source of happiness for her. Susie also leaves behind her sister-in-law, Joyce Whiting, and nephew, Chip Whiting IV, who will miss her guiding presence and unwavering support.
Susie's professional life was characterized by her commitment and hard work. She served as Assistant Administrator at Portage Manor, where she retired in 2014 after 32 years of dedicated service. Her colleagues remember her as a pillar of strength and a beacon of kindness within the workplace.
A member of the South Bend Turners, Susie found camaraderie and community. Her love for the outdoors was evident in her enthusiasm for camping and the ocean. She cherished her trips to Florida, where the sun and waves provided a backdrop for family memories that will be treasured forever.
Susie's life was one of engagement and enthusiasm. Her interests were as varied as they were numerous, but above all, she loved spending time with her granddaughter, Samantha. The bond they shared was a testament to Susie's loving spirit and her ability to make every moment count.
A Celebration of Life for Susie M. O'Neill will be held at a later date. Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Those wishing to leave condolences may visit www.palmerfuneralhomes.com to share memories and messages of comfort.
