COLTON - Sylvia B. "Sal" Smith, 86, of Colton passed away on March 6, 2026 at the United Helpers Maplewood Campus in Canton, NY after a long illness. There will be no funeral service or calling hours. There will be a spring burial held privately for the family in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Colton. A celebration of life will be held later in the spring.

Sylvia is survived by her husband of 70 years, William (Bill) Smith of Norwood, NY and formerly of Colton, NY; her brother, Pete and his wife Trudy Marceau of Arizona; a son William (Joe) Smith and his wife Susan of Massena NY; three daughters, Carol Ferguson and her husband Stephen of Ogdensburg, NY; Laurie Laforce of Massena, NY and Linda Osborne and her husband Wayne of Rome, NY; her beloved grandchildren William (Derick) Smith and his wife Emory, Susan Bogart, Molly Gage, Emily Miller and her husband Pete and Elizabeth Hobkirk as well as 4 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephew and cousins. Sylvia was pre-deceased by her parents Louis and Marie Marceau, a sister Rose Marie Robideau, a brother Louis (Levi) Marceau and 3 children that died in infancy, Jimmy, Theresa, and Lisa.

Sylvia Smith was born in Buffalo, NY on May 17, 1939, the daughter of the late Louis and Marie Bayard Marceau. She graduated with a regents GED. She married William (Bill) Smith on September 17, 1955. She was a dedicated mother, housewife and also hard working partner in the family business, traveling with Bill all over for storytelling and selling her beautiful handmade baskets. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was a member of the Colton Racqueteers Senior Citizens Club, Girl scout leader for many years, and attended Dawn Atkinson's monthly music group. Some of her personal attributes were that she was a wonderful wife, mother, cook, housekeeper and provided a multitude of gourmet food for basket workshops and family get-togethers over the years.
