Sylvia "Leigh" Leonie Whitmyer, age 97, passed away on February 9, 2024. Sylvia is the loving wife of the late Martin L. Whitmyer; the loving and devoted companion Clyde Schabacker; the cherished mother of Linda Chisnall, Michelle (Wayne) Whitmyer, Valerie Brown, Brian (Gretchen) Whitmyer, and Hillary (Larry) Tullio; the adored grandmother of Oliver (Anitra) Bennett, Barbie Bradley, Casy (Andrea) Stelk, Dallas Chisnall, Travis (Elizabeth) Tullio, Trevor (Melissa) Tullio, Cassidy (Kyle) Tullio, Ivy Ana Brown; the dear great-grandmother of Carter, Porter, Rachel, Loralei, Joslyn, Adreama, Dezmond, and Wrenly. Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, Lily and Percival, and her brothers, Gerald, Michael, and Reg.
Sylvia had one exciting life! She was an acrobat in a circus and even worked with the British-American comedy duo act, Laurel and Hardy! Sylvia toured in England and all around the United States for 10 years and retired at the age of 27 years young. Her stage name was "Leigh". She also entertained the military troops during World War II with her talent. Sylvia had a husband named Martin Luther. She grew up in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Sylvia attended the Church of England. Sylvia enjoyed many genre's of music; including country, pop, jazz, polka, and classical. She absolutely loved to travel, and she was able to go all over the world, including but not limited to Egypt, France, Scotland, Spain, Italy, Australia, and China. Sylvia played the drums professionally for many bands for over 54 years. She volunteered as a candy striper at hospitals in her spare time.
Sylvia's family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 8459 Hall Road (3 blocks East of Van Dyke, Utica. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 14, visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of her service at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment at White Chapel Cemetery, Troy.
