Tammy L. Byrd, 60, of Leasburg, Missouri, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
Tammy Lyn Rowden was born on March 11, 1964 to the late Allan and Kathleen (Joy) Rowden in Roda, Spain. Her adolescent years were spent for a brief time in Maryland and Cahokia, IL before her family settled in Leasburg, Missouri. It was here that she met the love of her life, Barrie Byrd. Their love story began early, and they were united in marriage on June 20, 1980. Together, they welcomed two wonderful children, Tara and Michael.
Tammy was a proud graduate of Bourbon High School, class of 1982. Following high school, Tammy's desire for knowledge led her to pursue a Nursing Degree from East Central College. However, Tammy soon realized her true calling was within education. She embarked on a remarkable 34-year career with the Crawford County R-I School District, starting as a substitute teacher, becoming a computer teacher, and eventually, the trusted counselor of Bourbon Middle School.
Tammy's passion for education drove her to further her own, earning a Masters in Education from Missouri Baptist University. Her dedication to counseling was evident as she completed her internship at Phelps County Regional Hospital, earning her the title of a licensed therapist. Her influence was profound, spearheading the SOAR Program, championing credit recovery for students, and providing unwavering support to countless young lives through various initiatives, including the Back Pack Program and the Adopt A Family program during Christmas.
Recently, Tammy played a pivotal role in securing a grant for the Warhawk Village Outdoor Educational Center, a testament to her commitment to enhancing the educational environment for her students. She was currently continuing this work, collaborating alongside a close friend and colleague, Brian Witt, in hopes to secure another grant for additional outdoor recreational equipment for the Warhawk Village.
Tammy's impact on her students was immeasurable, often encapsulated by her gentle yet firm guidance and her memorable phrase, "In a minute, but not now." Her legacy as an educator and counselor will live on in the hearts and minds of all who were fortunate enough to cross her path.
Beyond her professional achievements, Tammy's life was filled with joyous moments and cherished hobbies. She delighted in baking bread and sweet rolls for her family during Christmas. An adventurer at heart, Tammy reveled in exploring the natural wonders of national parks, from the geysers of Yellowstone to the ancient dwellings of Mesa Verde. Each journey was guaranteed to have a one of her famous road trip car concerts, with her favorite audience of one, Barrie. Tammy enjoyed spending time outdoors going for walks at Granny's farm and along the banks of the Meramec River.
Tammy was a lover of music, especially artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Pink, and all classic rock. She treasured her visits to Saint Charles to see her son, ensuring each trip included shopping and dining.
Tammy's love for the Leasburg community shone brightly through her volunteer work with the Leasburg Revitalization Organization. She was a driving force behind community events, bringing joy and support to those in need. Above all, Tammy was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her tenacity, love, and unwavering support made her Barrie's everything and a beacon of strength for her family.
