Terry Hudson "Hut" Dixon, a true gentleman whose life was defined by dignity, intellect, and devotion to family and community, peacefully transitioned from this life, on May 29th, leaving behind a legacy of love, learning, and leadership.
Born in
Burlington, North Carolina, Terry was the cherished son of the late Mildred Nadine Pettiford Dixon and Elder Darius Hudson "Pete" Dixon, Sr. He was raised in the close-knit community of Green Level, NC, where the values of hard work, education, and family took deep root in his spirit. He graduated from Pleasant Grove High School in 1959 as Valedictorian and continued his education at North Carolina A&T State University, earning a bachelor's degree in Math, History and French-an academic foundation that would inform a lifelong commitment to education and cultural awareness.
In 1962, Terry married the love of his life, Betty Morris Jeffries Dixon. Their union, which spanned over 62 years, was one of mutual respect, unwavering support, and deep affection. Together, they raised their beloved daughter, Sheria Kay Dixon Thompson (Wade), whom Terry adored and championed every step of the way.
Terry dedicated his professional life to shaping young minds and building strong educational institutions. He began his teaching career at Unity High School in Statesville, NC. He then moved back to Burlington and began teaching at Sellars-Gunn Education Center and went on to serve as principal at both Alexander Wilson Elementary and Graham High School. His students and colleagues remember him not only for his leadership and integrity but also for his deep belief in the power of education to change lives. He was especially proud to see his students succeed and find their place in the world.
A member of The Episcopal Church of Holy Comfort, in Burlington. Terry lived out his faith with quiet strength and a spirit of service. He was a man of deep thought and curiosity, an avid reader with a keen interest in politics, history, and family heritage. Whether watching his favorite political commentators on MSNBC or tracing the threads of his ancestral line, Terry remained a lifelong learner and truth-seeker.
Though serious-minded and thoughtful, Terry had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. He found joy in classic R&B, Jazz and Neo-Soul music, in conversations with family and friends, and in the simple pleasures of a life well-lived.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved sister, Ethel Dixon. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Betty; his daughter, Sheria (Wade); siblings, Garnetta "Sparkle" Dixon Pickett and Darius "Bug" Dixon; sister-in-law, Aljean Davis; nieces, Carolyn Jones Medine (Scott), Sheliah Jeffries Cobb (Harold), Beverly Jeffries Eason, Angella Hester and BeLedda Dixon, and his nephews; Maverick Jeffries (Helen) and Jerry Crisp Jr., extended family, and a cherished great-nephew, Cameron Clay Hester and great niece, Kayla Burns all of whom he loved dearly and who will miss him profoundly.
Terry Dixon's legacy is one of love, wisdom, and quiet strength. He touched countless lives and leaves behind a rich heritage of education, compassion, unwavering commitment to those he loved, and a strong believer of our Lord and Savior.
He was, and will remain in memory, a true gentleman loved by all.
