Terry Schaffner Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by James A. Reed Funeral Home - Pillow on Jan. 30, 2026.
On Saturday, January 24, 2026, Terry R. Schaffner of Dalmatia, entered the heavenly band. Terry was born in Sunbury, the son of the late Robert T. and Sarah J. (Rupp) Schaffner.

Terry was a graduate of Shikellamy High School. On his 18th birthday he left for basic training at Ft. Benning, Georgia and from there he went on to graduate from the Armed Forces School of Music. He served with the 327th band at Edgewood, Md. and finished his service with the 101st Airborne in Viet Nam. Shortly after his return home, he met his future wife, Betty. They shared 54 years of marriage and were blessed with their daughter, Wendy.

Terry wanted to share his love of music with others and planned to get his teaching degree. But he quickly learned that he didn't have the patience to deal with those who were not as dedicated to the arts.

Terry worked at Plaza Shopping Center, was a salesman for Hoover, owned his own home appliance store and repaired home appliances for Sears. But his love was still music. For many years he taught sax, clarinet and flute privately. He also played with the following; Mal Arter's Band, Sunbury City Band, Charlie Varanco's Band, After Hours Big Band and his small group Swing and a Miss. He also played in the pit for many school musicals and community musical productions.

Terry enjoyed hunting, going upstate to spend time in the woods and playing golf. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion, and lifetime member of Hickory Corners Fire Company.

Terry is survived by his wife, Betty (Dreibelbis), his daughter, Wendy McClure (Darren) and grandson, Kyle McClure (fiancée, Hanna Scanlon) and sister L. Sue Ammon. He was preceded by his parents, brother, Robert Schaffner, Jr., and sister, Patti Kline. We are grateful for the many other friends and family who have been a special part in his life.

Celebration of Life will be held at Hickory Corners Fire Hall (1124 Hickory Rd; Dalmatia 17017) February 7, 2026. The visitation at 10 AM followed by service at 11 AM.

Memorial contributions can be sent to Pennian Bank 24021 RT 333 Thompsontown PA 17094 Terry Schaffner Memorial Fund to support local schools musical needs.
