Theodore "Teddy" Mapes, 82, of Suffern, NY, passed away of natural causes on July 8, 2025.

Born on January 2, 1943, in Queens, Teddy was raised in the Astoria neighborhood. He lived a

life defined by passion, purpose, and service to others. In the early 1960s, he met the first love of

his life, Marcella McFarland. Teddy and Marcy were married in September 1963 and soon

began building a loving family together. Their marriage was marked by deep affection, and

unwavering commitment.

Teddy devoted many years of his career to the New York City Transit Authority, beginning as

a bus driver navigating the bustling streets of Manhattan. Finding sobriety in 1982 through

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), he discovered he had a gift in helping others. Teddy dove

headfirst into AA, sponsoring many, organizing groups, volunteering, and giving himself to

anyone who asked. Teddy found his true calling in helping others and he pursued and achieved

his license as a certified substance abuse counselor. With empathy, wisdom, and tireless

dedication, Teddy helped countless members of the NYC Transport Workers Union

(TWU)-and their families-find hope, healing, and a path forward. Teddy literally touching the

lives of thousands of men and women looking for an empathetic touch. Teddy continued to give

of himself by working closely with the Franciscan Friars at Graymoor in Garrison NY. Teddy

donated his time and skills as a certified counselor and as a skilled barber. The improvement in

self esteem and confidence a simple haircut provided to someone in need, was not lost on Teddy

and he felt this was just another way to provide a sense of belonging and connection.

His passion for this work led him to co-found Labor Assistance Professionals (LAP), a

national organization that now includes more than 450 members and representing tens of

thousands of labor professionals across the country. Teddy's life's work continues to resonate

through the many lives he touched.

Teddy was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy (Hough) Mapes, father Theodore Mapes

Sr., brother Richard, beloved wife Marcy, son Theodore, and granddaughter Colleen (Mapes)

Montague.

He is survived by his daughter Dorothy (Mapes) Rogers, son Patrick Mapes and his wife

Julie, and his grandchildren; Victoria, Shannon, Theodore, David, Scott, Marcy and several

great-grandchildren. He is also lovingly remembered by his cherished partner of 18 years,

Mary Dinterman.

Teddy's legacy is one of compassion, commitment, and resilience. He will be deeply missed by

all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Visitation will be held at Sorce Funeral Home in Pearl River, NY on July 18 2 to 4pm, and

6-8pm. Funeral Mass will be had at St. Margaret's Catholic Church on July 19 at 11am. In

lieu of flowers, the family asks you consider a donation to St. Christopher's Inn at

Graymoor.
