Thomas J. Barrett, known affectionately as Tom to his friends and family, passed away peacefully at his home on February 28, 2025, at the age of 67. Born on November 19, 1957, in Jersey City, Tom was a lifelong resident of New Jersey, moving to North Arlington during his childhood where he later graduated from North Arlington High School. He spent his formative years there before eventually settling in Flanders 40 years ago.
Tom's passion for automobiles was ignited early in life by his father, James, who taught him the intricacies of car repair. This early education blossomed into a lifelong love affair with all things automotive. Tom's career as an autobody mechanic and painter saw him work at several shops, where he was known for his meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish a side business in automotive restoration, where he restored classic cars to their former glory with the same care and dedication he applied to every aspect of his life.
Outside of work, Tom was a true automotive enthusiast. He built car models, collected diecast model cars, and was a regular at car shows, proudly displaying his meticulously maintained Cadillac. He found joy and relaxation in tinkering on cars, a hobby that was both a personal pleasure and a way to connect with fellow car lovers.
Tom is survived by his loving sisters and brothers-in-law, Karen and Stan Proskurnia, and Maureen and Sal Martino. Tom was a cherished uncle to his nephews, Peter and Max Martino, and nieces, Alison (Eric) Cleary, Lori Ann (Carl) Weiss, and Jennifer (John) Nosti and a great-uncle to several great-nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, James and Patricia Barrett, and his brothers, James and Robert.
Tom's life was a testament to the joy that can be found in following one's passions. As we say goodbye to Thomas J. Barrett, we celebrate a life well-lived and well-loved. Tom's absence will be deeply felt, but the memories he created will continue to bring smiles and comfort to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Please join the family as we celebrate Tom's life at a Memorial Gathering on March 8th from 3 - 5 pm. A Service to Celebrate Tom's life will conclude the afternoon

Tweets, I am a better person to have known you and called you friend. So many great memories of car shows, camping and just hanging out. Rest in peace my friend. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Tweets, you will be missed. You always put a smile on my face. You always trusted me, and you proved it on the night of March 22, 1986. As scared as you were to fly, you got into that airplane with me, and it was off to a scenic night view looking down on NYC. Will be thinking of you, and all the great times. Ken "Anders" Murphy.
