Tom´s passing and even his funeral, which I learned about after the fact, caught me completely by surprise. Though we usually exchanged no more than a few words of greeting, there was something we had in common-Doris and I found ourselves in the same church as Tom and Linda after so many years together in a different parish. Perhaps it was our successful searches for inspiration and enlightenment that brought us all four to lovely St. Helena. Entering the church and finding Linda and Tom seated in or close to the third row in the back was somewhat reassuring to me-it seemed as though they had my back. Years before, I had asked Tom for his assistance in evaluating whether I was reading loudly enough to reach him far from my stance at the lecturn. His thumbs up was encouragement that I was indeed reading at the proper volume. Only later did I learn in following up with Tom that the raised thumb was telling me to talk louder-a lesson I have tried to remember ever since. Tom, we are going to miss you. Linda, your story about one of Tom´s bouts in the hospital is still fresh in my mind, and Doris and I will now feel a bit lonely knowing that you and Tom are not there behind us.
Vale, mi amice. Requiescas in pace.

I was shocked to hear of Tom's passing. He was so alive and vibrant. I will always remember him standing with Joe and greeting us as we walked into Mass on Saturdays. I'm so sorry.
