Thomas Jackson Cunningham, 94, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2025, in Durham, California. Born on August 12, 1931, in Harvey, Illinois, Thomas lived a life marked by dedication to service, family, and community.

Thomas began his lifelong commitment to serving his country when he joined the United States Navy in 1951. He served aboard the USS Harry E. Hubbard (DD-748) until 1955. Following his naval service, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he continued to serve with distinction until his retirement in 1972. His military career spanned over two decades and reflected his steadfast sense of duty and patriotism.

After retiring from the military, Thomas transitioned into civilian service with the City of Lompoc. He worked at the Lompoc Water Treatment Plant for more than 20 years before retiring again in 1994. His work ethic and commitment to public service left a lasting impact on those around him.

Thomas was deeply involved in his community throughout his life. A proud member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years, a longtime member of the Elks Lodge and Disabled American Veterans, he found joy and camaraderie in these organizations. His hobbies included diving, billiards, bowling, card games, crossword puzzles, and sudoku-activities that reflected both his adventurous spirit and sharp mind.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Ruthe (Fetcho) Cunningham; three daughters: Deborah Adema (Joel), Catherine Cunningham (Melinda Bartlett), and Patricia Libby (Randall); one son, Thomas Cunningham Jr; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Lucy (Carey) Cunningham and Alex Cunningham; his sister, Lois Hoge; and his daughter, Jacque DeCosta.

A Funeral Mass will be held on September 22, 2025, at 2:00pm (1:30pm rosary) at St. James Catholic Church, 2416 Faber Street, Durham, CA 95938. Following the service, a Celebration of Life will be held at Durham Community Park, 1847 Durham-Dayton Hwy, Durham, CA 95938

Thomas Jackson Cunningham's legacy is one of honor, resilience, and devotion-to his country, to his work, and most importantly to those he loved. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
