Thomas J. Evans, "Old T.J."
On February 7, 2024, of Washington Twp. Age 99, 6 months, 8 days old. Beloved husband of the late Dorothy (nee Lee). Devoted father of Ted (Cindy), and the late Thomas Evans. Loving grandfather of Sean, Geoffrey, Kelly, Matthew, Ryan, Shennen, and the late Brandon. Proud great-grandfather of Seana, Geoffrey, Evan, Hunter, J.T., Camden, and Brandon.
Born in Gloucester City, N.J., Mr. Evans grew up in the Fairview section of Camden. He attended St. Joan of Arc, Hatch Jr. High, and Camden High School. Mr. Evans was an iron worker employed for 37 years by Morris-Wheeler Co in Philadelphia. He was an avid bowler and fisherman. He enjoyed all sports. He was a member of four surf fishing clubs, including the 800 Club, the Happy Hookers of Holgate, the New Jersey Beach Buggy Club, and Fishlanders of Turnersville. He also enjoyed sport fishing from his boat. He was the first president of the Washington Township Athletic Association and was active in baseball, basketball, and football.
Tom had a gift for story-telling and enjoyed dancing. With great affection, he adored recounting the story of how he met the love of his life, Dorothy. After an evening roller skating, Tom was in a pharmacy and put money into a jukebox. A young lady came up and asked, "Do you dance?" Weeks later, walking down the street, Dorothy pointed to a ring in a window and said, "That's the ring I want." It was the first they spoke of marrying. Eight months later they became Mr. and Mrs. Evans.
Tom was a veteran of World War II, having served as a forward observer for artillery for the XII Corp, known as the "Spearhead of Patton's Third Army." He was very proud of his part in the Battle of the Bulge. Tom was a member of local V.F.W.
Family and friends are invited to attend his viewing Tuesday 9:30-11:00 AM at the Egizi Funeral Home, 119 Ganttown Road, Washington Twp. Funeral service 11:00 AM. Interment, Hillcrest Memorial Park, Washinton Twp.
