Tom Frye passed away unexpectedly at his home in Winnetka on September 23, 2025. A beloved husband, father, brother, son, uncle, cousin and friend, Tom left us all too soon, and he will be profoundly missed by those who were fortunate to have known him.
Tom was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio, to Glenn McKinley (Mac) Frye Jr. and Ruth Lowson Frye. A graduate of Shaker Heights High School and the University of Denver, Tom spent most of his career involved with commercial real estate development in New York, Atlanta and Chicago. However, his true passion was the more than 15 years he spent as a coach, board member and Regional Commissioner for the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO). He devoted his time and energy to growing the AYSO program in the New Trier area, founding the EXTRA program and the Elite Strikers club program. Tom generously volunteered thousands of hours in a variety of leadership roles on the AYSO Board.
Tom loved to travel and his stories about his adventures in Africa and Australia, time spent with his brother in Fiji, and fishing trips off Montauk, in the Florida Keys and Mexico, entertained many a dinner party. He was a lover of science, a believer in people, and someone who enjoyed a good debate, as well as a good book. Tom's world revolved around his daughter Teagan, leading to his initial involvement with AYSO soccer, his love of University of Michigan sports, and his mission to teach her about musical greats like Van Morrison, Stevie Nicks, and Carole King. He was incredibly proud of the woman Teagan has become. Tom enjoyed nothing more than spending time with family and friends and was diligent about staying in touch with those he cared about. Tom never met a dog he did not like, and the feeling was mutual.
Tom is survived by his wife and best friend Kimberly Frye; the light of his life, his daughter Teagan Frye; his brother Doug Frye, sister-in-law Jane Taylor, and niece Kelly Taylor Frye; brother Stephen Frye, sister-in-law Sally Frye, niece Amanda Fratrik (husband Craig), and nephews Warren Frye and Andrew Frye; parents-in-law Brian and Elaine Klatt, brother-in-law Brian Klatt, sister-in-law Dana Blais Klatt, niece Cara Klatt, and nephews Alexander Klatt and Dominic Klatt; cousins James Capalino (wife Carlin), Mark Williams (wife Jean), Dean Williams, Laura Williams (husband Derek), and aunt Aileen Williams. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his uncle David Williams, his cousins Billy and David Capalino, his aunt Florence Capalino and his uncle and namesake Frank Thomas Capalino.
A celebration of life will be planned for some point in the future. Nothing would mean more to Tom, in honor of his memory, than that those who knew him would spend some extra time with their loved ones and friends. And for anyone with children in the AYSO program, please consider volunteering.
Tom will forever hold a cherished place in the hearts of those who loved him. His generosity of spirit, inquisitive mind, sense of humor and caring heart will be deeply missed.
