A Mass of Christian Burial for Thomas "Tom" M. Herr, 76, of Heath, will be held at St. Leonard Catholic Church, 11:00 A.M., Friday, August 18, 2023, with Fr. Bill Hritsko as celebrant. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance. A Rosary Service will be held in the Church at 9:45 A.M., followed by calling from 10-11 A.M prior to the funeral Mass.
Tom died at Licking Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, August 8, 2023. He was born in Easton, Maryland on November 26, 1946, to the late Harold and Ellen Lee (Lachmar) Herr.
Due to his father's employment with the government, Tom lived in various locations over the years, including Japan. He became a resident of Heath in 1963 and was a Heath High School 1965 graduate. Tom attended Ohio University prior to being drafted into the United States Army, serving from 1966-1969; and with the Army Reserves and Ohio National Guard from 1969- 1993, retiring as an E-5.
Tom was employed by Owens Corning Fiberglas from 1965-2001. He was an active parishioner of St. Leonard Catholic Church volunteering as a greeter, parish council member, church cleaner, Knights of Columbus (treasurer), and was instrumental in the St. Vincent DePaul start up. Tom was also a CYO leader and former area representative for the Youth for Understanding student exchange program.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Patricia Susan Watson Herr, whom he married on June 17, 1967; daughter, Tanya (Stephen Jr.) Dunn; 3 granddaughters, Jess (Chase) Pierson, Hailey Dunn (Matt), and Brittany Dunn, all of Texas; 3 great-grandchildren Hayden Crawford Manis, Reese Taylor Pierson, and Ensley Ann Manis (with another on the way); brother, Michael (Carol) Herr; sisters-in-law, Gretchen (Bernie) Madrid and Carla Watson; numerous nieces and nephews; exchange student daughters, Kaori (Japan), Adriana (Colombia), Ana, Carmen and Marie Esther (Spain), Ulla and Katy (Finland) and Kerstin (Germany).
In addition to his parents, and in-laws, Eugene and Virginia Watson, Tom was preceded in death by his brother, Anthony; nephew, Eugene Madrid; sister-in-law, Mary Grace Lombardo Watson; brothers-in-law, Michael Watson, Rodger Watson; niece, Katrina Madrid; nephew, David Madrid; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family requests memorials in Tom's name be made to the Licking County Humane Society, 825 Thornwood Drive, Heath, Ohio 43056.
