Thomas Brevard Knox, III (Tommy) was born on November 4, 1943 and went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 6, 2025. Tommy was raised in Cornelius by his parents Ida Virginia Bumgarner Knox and Thomas Brevard Knox, II, both of whom are deceased.
After graduating high school, he served in the United States Army before beginning his career as a Surveyor and Draftsman, working 40+ years for R.B. Pharr and Associates.
Tommy was a life long member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, serving on numerous committees over the years, most notibly Cemetery and Building committees. He was also a longtime member of the Bethel Ramblers and Logos Sunday School class. The church choir was another passion for Tommy as he was a member for nearly 60 years.
Tommy was a servant leader and had a profound impact on the lives of countless others. The founding of Boy Scout Troop 72 in 1968 was the greatest legacy that Tommy is leaving with us. After chartering the troop, he spent nearly 40 years serving as the Scout Master where he influenced the lives of hundreds of boys and young men. Tommy witnessed over 100 Scouts earn the rank of Eagle, which is the most difficult and highest award in the Boy Scouts of America. Many of these Scouts have gone on to serve important roles in the military and emergency services.
There was no slow down in the later years for Tommy as he continued to serve with Habitat for Humanity and American Legion Post 86. In his spare time, he also made bird houses and keychains that he would give away to anyone that would take them. He was a witness for Christ in everything he did.
Tommy is preceded in death by his wife, Frances Gail Sherrill Knox. He is survived by his sister, Mary Nell Fite (husband Larry); brothers, Mike Knox and Lee Knox (wife Susan); daughter, Lara Scott (husband John); sons, Thomas Knox (wife Brandy), and Alvin Knox; grandchildren, Jessica Knox (husband Tyler), Ashley Burgess (husband Sonny), Tristan Knox, and Eden Knox; and great grandchildren, Sadie Knox and Lincoln Knox.
Services will be held on Friday May 9th at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Cornelius. The family will receive friends from 2:30 - 4:00 and the funeral service will begin at 4:00 with graveside to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Troop 72, c/o Bethel Presbyterian.

Dear Knox family, We just learned of Tommy's passing. What a wonderful friend he always was to our father, Bill Norberg. They were great friends from church and also served in the American Legion together; Tommy participated in our Dad's funeral in 2023. We had several overnight trips lined up but Tommy was not able to go with us but we kept him informed. He was a gracious Christian man and we'll miss him.
With Love, Jack Norberg and Family
