Thomas J. Mahler, 79, of
Millsboro, DE passed away at home on July 16 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was born on June 6, 1944 and raised in Collingdale, PA by his parents Esther (Krauskopf) and Louis Mahler.
Tom was a beloved husband to his wife of 54 years, Roberta (Winkler) and a loving father to his daughter, Patty and son-in-law, Steve Rivituso. Also surviving are three much loved grandchildren, Kristin, Ashley, and Anthony Rivituso. Other family members are sister-in-law, Louise Winkler, brothers-in-law, Carl Winkler, Edward Winkler (wife Linda). Also many nieces, nephews, and 2nd cousins.
After graduating from Collingdale High School in 1962 he continued his education at Kutztown State College majoring in Comprehensive Social Studies and graduated earning a BS. in 1967.
Several years later he earned a Master of Education from Central Michigan University. Tom's first teaching position was at Haverford Junior High School where he also coached football. After two years in Junior High School he secured a position at Christiana High School in Newark where he also coached girl's track. In 1981 he accepted a Social Studies position at Sussex Central High School,
Georgetown, DE at which time he moved his family to Millsboro. His next move was to Indian River High School, Dagsboro, DE where he took the position of Assistant Principal, touching the lives of countless students and colleagues. He finished his teaching career as a Career Counselor in 2002 after 35 years of service.
Tom will be remembered as a dedicated family man, accomplished educator and active community leader. He made a lasting impact on those around him through his various roles and genuine character.
After retirement he devoted his time to Community Service. He held the position of President of the Lion's Club, President of the Sea Pines Homeowners Association and served on the Board of Adjustment in Bethany Beach. He also found joy in his membership with the Delaware Seaside Train Club. His love of Lionel trains was begun as a young child and carried over into his retirement hobby. He designed and built a beautiful extensive layout. Friends and family can find their names on various buildings and businesses on his layout. Tom also enjoyed many trips with friends taken during his retirement.
A celebration of Tom's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Service, 32013 Long Neck Rd.,
Millsboro, DE where friends and family may visit after 10:00 AM.
Interment will be private.
