Thomas (Tom) C. McBratney II, 73, of Basehor, KS, passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2025, doing what he loved, riding his motorcycle. He was born in Kansas City, Kansas to Thomas C. McBratney, and Mary C. McBratney (Koonse). He grew up in Kansas City, Kansas and graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1969. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Catherine and Thomas C. McBratney.
He was married to Bonnie McBratney and had three children. He is survived by his children: Kristie McBratney-Buhr (Ron Buhr), Lawrence, KS; Matthew McBratney (Kim), Basehor, KS, and Jonathan McBratney, Bonner Spring, KS. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Cole McBratney, Olathe, KS; Cavan McBratney, Kansas City, MO; Josh Pladies, Lake Lotawana, MO, and Justin Pladies (Rachel), Topeka, KS; his sister Deborah McBratney-Stapleton of Anderson, IN, his brother, Kevin McBratney of Kansas City, KS and his Uncle Charles Koonse of Stanley, KS.
Tom worked at the Board of Public Utilities, Kansas City, KS for over 30 years until he retired. Tom was a life member of the Wyandotte Lodge #3 (AFAM) where he achieved Worshipful Master. Tom enjoyed a long retirement and was able to spend time doing what he loved; watching the Chiefs, his firearms, talking politics and most of all, riding motorcycles with his friends. He traveled the United States with fellow riders and motorcycle group, Reno's Riders and participating in the Guymon, OK 5 State Run for over 20 years. He earned Harley Davidson's 250,000-plus mile club designation. Tom supported local VFM and American Legion organizations and served as a Patriot Rider. He loved his country; MAGA! Tom loved watching his kids play sports and later his grandkids.
Tom loved spending time with family and friends. If you knew Tom, he loved breakfast! Every Monday and Thursday, he met with his fellow retirees for breakfast. He also enjoyed his biweekly breakfast in Lawrence with Kristie and Ron. He will be most remembered for being a devoted father, grandpa, and friend-a man of strength, kindness, generosity, and the biggest heart. We are grateful for every moment shared with Tom, and he will be deeply missed.
Visitation will be held from 1:00–3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 5, 2025, at Highland Park Funeral Home, 4101 State Avenue, Kansas City, KS. Family burial to follow at Highland Park Cemetery.
