Known for his booming laugh, kind smile, loyalty and humility, Tom endured a 16-month battle with oral cancer. He passed away after a courageous fight on October 18 th at the age of 81.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. John L. Mercer and Josephine Jewett Mercer, as well as his sister, Charlotte Cleary.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Mary Pat Mackey, only daughter, Mara Mercer (Michael Summers) and beloved grandson, Cormac Lantry Mercer Summers.
He is also survived by his dear sister, Mary Loomis (Carson) and her children Nathan (Sharon), Dawn (Zach), Duncan (Claire) and their children. He is also survived by many lifelong friends and family members.
Tom was born in
Rochester, NY on November 14 th, 1943. He graduated from Monroe High School and received his bachelor's degree from Heidelberg University in Ohio. For over 40 years, Tom worked in petroleum sales at S&W Services (formerly Okar Equipment). He was respected for his steadfast dedication to his work, and kindness towards his colleagues.
Tom was known for his love and appreciation for his friends. He surrounded himself with many groups of fun-loving people, with whom he had countless good times at Pine Bank, Cache Lake, the Brighton, O'Laughlin's and at the annual Bachelor's Cotillion. He enjoyed tennis, golf, skiing, sailing, and canoeing; he was most at peace when he was in nature, and having a Molson in hand didn't hurt!
He delighted in his family and will be remembered for his thoughtfulness, reverence, and unending support. Over the past two years, he found immeasurable joy and strength by spending time with his grandson. While the impact of his absence is profound, we are overcome with gratitude for having had the opportunity to have loved and be loved by him.
