Dr. Thomas Joseph Schmitt, 94, beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend of Valley Grove, WV passed away surrounded by family on Thurs, Feb 27, 2025.
Born and raised in Donora, PA, he is preceded in death by his father Dr. Henry Joseph Schmitt, mother Rose Carr Schmitt, brothers Dr. Joseph Schmitt, Dr. William Schmitt, Dr. Henry (Hank) Schmitt, and sister Margaret (Peggie) Schmitt.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Donna S. Schmitt, sisters Mary Ann Schmitt Goodrum and Rose C. Keene, brother John (Jack) Robert Schmitt, children Dr. Thomas Schmitt (Pamella), John F. Schmitt, David Schmitt (Dr. Ling Ling Schmitt), Claudine Schmitt Wahl, Matthew Schmitt (Justin), Benjamin Schmitt (Penny), grandchildren Michael, Logan (Rachel), Maria, Katelynn (Benjamin), Christopher, Jacqueline (Joseph), Tyler, Cameron, Samuel, Lily, Analysa and Zennia, and great grandchildren Weston, Jaxon, Elijah, Reagan Rose, and Hazel Grace as well as many nieces and nephews.
Dr. Schmitt is a graduate of Duquesne University, the Catholic University of Louvain, and the University of Brussels where he received his medical degree as a magna cum laude. During his distinguished career as both a primary care physician and an emergency room physician, Dr. Schmitt was honored to serve the Wheeling community for more than 50 years. For his residency and fellowship in endocrinology, he completed several years of training at West Penn Hospital and Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was a member of the West Virginia Society of Internal Medicine, the National Association of Disability Evaluating Physicians, the American Board of Disability Analysts, the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and a licensed Clinical Laboratory Director. As a United States Army veteran, he proudly served in the Korean war and belongs to the Sistersville WV VFW. Dr Schmitt was a member of the Pittsburgh Teutonia Mannerchor German Club where he played the organ and sang in the choir. He was also an accomplished martial artist earning black belts in several disciplines. His pastimes included gardening, reading, playing the piano and organ, learning foreign languages, and spending time with his grandchildren and friends at Elmhurst House of Friendship. He will be missed by many.
Friends will be received on Friday, March 7, 2025 from 6-8 PM with a Rosary Service at 7:30 PM at Kepner Funeral Homes, 900 National Road, Wheeling, WV (304-232-2732). Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 12:00 PM at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, 1300 Eoff Street, Wheeling, WV 26003 with Father Penumaka Manikyalarao as celebrant. Entombment will follow the mass in Mt. Calvary Mausoleum.

Dr. Schmidt was my doctor, friend and he was like a father to me. He saved my life quite a few times over the years. I loved him and will sadly miss him. I've thought of him frequently since he had to retire his practice. I'm very sorry for your loss!
