Thomas Aaron Smith, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and pillar of the Bedford County, Tennessee community, passed away on March 5, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on November 2, 1936, to John Alonzo Smith and Mary Etta Ball Smith, Thomas lived his entire life in Bedford County, where he left an enduring mark through his dedication to his family, faith, and community service.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, his son Mitchell Smith, his brothers Robert "Bobby" Smith and Donald Smith, and his sister Norene Adcock. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Geneva Smith, with whom he built a life filled with love and commitment. He also leaves behind his daughters, Cindy Smith Day and Rheaetta McKamey (Bob McKamey), as well as three cherished grandchildren: Jessica Aaron Austin (Thomas), Seth Hollingsworth Day, and Hunter McKamey (Jennifer) and three precious great-grandchildren, Nori Margeaux Day, Vivian Day Austin, and Aaron Thomas Austin, who brought "Papa" endless joy in his later years. He is also survived by his brother Joe Smith and sister Sue Smith.
A lifelong member of the Fairlane Church of Christ, Thomas' faith guided his life and actions. After graduating from Shelbyville Central High School in 1956, he served his country by joining the National Guard. His career began at Jersey Farms Milk Company, where he diligently ran his milk route, serving the citizens of Bedford County for 30 years. Instead of retiring after 30 years of hard work at Jersey Farms, Thomas decided to start down a brand-new career path; local politics. In 1986, he ran for and was elected as the Bedford County Circuit Court Clerk, a role he fulfilled and served with integrity and devotion for 28 years until he retired in 2014. After his "retirement" Thomas' commitment to his community endured as he worked for the Bedford County Senior Citizens from October 2014 through January 2024.
Thomas was a Master Mason and Shriner for 57 years and took an active role as a member of the Bedford County Breakfast Rotary, Kiwanis Club member and Board member of the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration, where he forged lasting friendships and contributed to local endeavors.
Known by all for his unwavering work ethic, warm smile, and generous heart, Thomas Aaron Smith will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched throughout Bedford County.
His legacy of loyalty, kindness, and community service will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 9, 2025, from noon until 3:00 p.m., followed by funeral services at 3:00 p.m. Services will be conducted by Doak Howell Funeral Home with Jeff Collett and Kenneth Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Houston-Whitworth Cemetery.
