Mary Lynn and Swanson Family:
My deepest sympathy goes out to the whole family. I've known Tom for 18+ years at PAG. He was a dear friend to me and my family. We have alot of memories of Tom at PAG that will always be treasured. He was very well liked here and I will miss him dearly. Take Care and my prayers and thoughts are with you.

Dear Mary Lynn,
It's been almost a month since Tom's passing into God's Loving Care. Although, I hadn't sent you and Tom's Sons/Family my condolences, my thoughts and prayers have been with you. It has been very sad for me as Tom was such a close and dear friend. I loved the guy! I have so many fond memories of our great times together since our meeting in 1986. His sense of humor coupled with his professionalism was so unique that he touched many people over the years. I was so happy that he found you...I know he was. His love for his sons, Michael and Matthew, was quite evident. He was so proud of them. Mary Lynn, I want to thank you for Tom's return to Tucson for his 60th birthday. I was one of the lucky ones to have visited with him. I lost a dear Friend and I will miss him.

Dear Mary Lyn,
Thank you for loving and taking care of Tom. He was the one who always took care of others and tended to distain attention for himself. Tom is sorely missed. I was devastated to learn that we all are going to have to get along without him now.
I will always cherish the relationship that we enjoyed over the last 25 years, beginning in 1979 when I went to Tucson to be the director of the PAG transportation planning office. We acomplished a great deal and we got along famously. He would get the two of us laughing till we cried. That was life giving and a sign of the love and spirit that was with us even after separated by geography, positions and issues. These earthly situations always change but quality relationships endure and so it was with Tom.
My sincere gratitude, sympathy and condolences go out to you, Michael, Matthew, family and friends. May you be comforted in the memories you shared along with the thoughts and best wishes of your friends.

Dear Mary Lynn,
Tom and I worked many years together and I hold Tom in the highest regard. Even when it seem like we would not be able to accomplish our planning objectives in the face of public dissension Tom's ability to put everything in perspective with a bit of humor was always appreciated. Tom will be missed by all he came in contact with. We share your loss and may God be with you.

Tom's loss removes one of the "Good Guys" from our midst. Tom's irreverent humor kept us "PAGlets" up to speed during difficult times, and he left a legacy of exemplary work in metropolitan government. Many join in sympathetic thoughts and prayers for his family and friends.

Mary Lynn, Tom was one of a kind, the best that this earth has to offer and all of us, his brothers in Beta and family and friends, and more especially YOU, have been blessed to have had Tom in our lives, even if for such a little while. If you ever need anything, please let me know. Hope to meet you one of these days. Sincerely,

Dear Mary Lynn,
It is of course no surprise that you are getting so many warm and heartfelt messages about Tom. When I talked to him recently on the phone he was his usual positive self and was convincing in his effervesencent attitude that all would be fine. Knowing he was very ill, his comments only further exemplified his life long attitude of keeping people thinking positively reguardless of the situation. He will be missed by all means and hopefully you will be able to quickly use the memories of his life to help you through this trying time.

To MaryLynn and the Swanson family: It's taken me awhile to wish you my prayers, condolences and sympathy for the loss of Tom. He has touched so many over his life time and I especially had many things to thank him for during my 25 years at PAG with him. He always had faith in my abilities through good times and bad and I owed him loyalty as an employee and friend. As many have already said, I'm thankful he had some happy times with his new life. Thank you also for this guest book and a way to share our good thoughts of TLS.
Sincerely, Rita, Jeff and Denise

It was my pleasure to know Tom when he was Executive Director of the Pima Association of Governments (PAG) and I was a member of the Arizona State Transportation Board. We had divergent views on many transportation issues, but that didn't keep me or any member of the Board from having deep respect for Tom's honest point of view. My deepest sympathy to Tom's family.

Please accept our sympathy and condolences for Tom's passing. Having known you both before you met, I was so happily surprised when you told me that you were getting married. Tom was a fine and gentle man who possessed a terrific sense of humor. He will be missed by all of us who were fortunate to know him. Heather, Sean, and Tyler asked me to pass on their deepest sympathies. Please know that we are thinking of you and that share your grief.

Mary Lynn: I was shocked to hear of Tom's passing. As you know I worked with Tom and PAG for many years prior to your coming to ADOT. I was tickled to hear that you and Tom had married and gone back to Virginia. That "new life" has been much too short. Please accept my condolences and best wishes as you and Tom's family move ahead. Tom was very special to Arizona and Pima County - and all of his family.

To Mary Lynn, Matt, Michael and Family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you. Tom was not only a pleasure to work for, but he had a gift for reading people and relating to every kind of person he met. He treated his staff with the utmost respect and confidence and allowed them to their job without interference. In turn, he got 150+% from them and he made PAG a wonderful place to work. I am grateful to have had the pleasure of working under him. His sense of humor will be remembered by everyone who met him and there is not a day that goes by at PAG that we don’t miss his leadership and management style. I take comfort in knowing he was so happy with Mary Lynn and very proud of his boys.

Mary Lynn and Family,
I never knew Tom to have a bad day. He was always a great guy to be with, even if he had just totally bombed an exam. After school we would see each other when he trekked to the Navajo reservation with Shell Oil and he remained his positive self. Tom was a good fraternity brother and good man. God Bless his soul.

Dear Mary Lynn,
It's so sad to learn of Tom's passing, especially knowing from later reports that he seemed to be making some progress and fighting so strongly. I can't imagine the sense of loss you and your and his family must feel; I can only offer my condolences and prayers.
I know, from a conversation a while back and a couple of e-mails, how enamored Tom was of you and how excited he was about approaching his new life in Richmond (unfamiliar humidity notwithstanding) -- and especially how happy he was to have met you and fallen in love so hard.
As you know, the Beta "thing" was especially strong in our chapter in Tucson during Tom's years there, and I'm pretty sure all of us who knew him -- and loved his whacked sense of humor and great smile -- would agree that he was one of the very best examples of Delta Beta we knew.
He is, and will be, greatly missed.
Sincerely,
Charlie White

To Tom's family: I haven't seen Tom since we graduated from the University of Arizona in the late 1960's, but remember him vividly! He was a great guy to be around and a real contributor to the Beta spirit. I only recently heard of Tom's health problems, and immediately felt a bond with Tom, even over the distance that separates us, as I too have had heart problems (5 operations, 6 bypasses, 4 stents, pacemakder/defibrilator). I called Tom just a few weeks ago and he was cheerful and hopeful. I've very sad
to learn that he's not with us anymore. We will miss him!

During the 12 years I was at PAG, Tom was the boss. In the Hispanic Culture all bosses need to have a nickname. So I named him "El Cisne" (The Swan). He loved it when he heard someone say, "Here comes El Cisne." May God have mercy.

Mary Lynn & family: It is never easy to lose someone from your life, but when that person is as special as Tom, it is just that more painful. He was such a wonderful person, and brought such enjoyment to those with whom he came in contact, that is is doubly difficult for all of us to now be deprived of his gifts. A good friend, father & husband, he will be terribly missed. The best part of this difficult time is all the wonderful memories we have that will buoy us as we go forward.

Tom's real mark was taking his business seriously without taking himself seriously. He demonstrated this to me over a letter that I had written as a joke to my supervisor, but was signed and sent without question, by mistake. Anyone else would have been insulted (and may have never forgiven either me or my boss), but it struck a note with Tom that instantly endeared me to him. That taught me a lesson, and Tom shared more of his wisdom and quirky sense of humor during his tenure in Tucson. He provided a unique brand of courage and leadership that seemed to work, even though it was contrary to all of the dogma of politics in Arizona. I thank Tom for opening his heart and mind to me, and wish all those he held dear and who hold him dear my deepest sympathies.

Tom was a great friend and mentor to me. We worked together at PAG for 16 years. We made each other laugh as we tried to move the region forward in a constructive way. There are so many pieces of advice that Tom gave to me, but they were slightly irreverent (you know Tom!) so I won't repeat them here. Tom was a great friend. I'm very sorry for your loss. I'm very sorry that the people in his life on the east coast didn't get as much quality time with Tom as those of us in Arizona had. Tom will be greatly missed.
