Thomas Otto Wilkinson, born March 7, 1932, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, and friend, Tom's life was defined by kindness, faith, generosity, hard work and a deep love for people.
Tom was married for 64 wonderful years to Ethel Louise, the love of his life and his steadfast partner in every chapter. Together they raised four children who carry forward his legacy of humor, service, and family devotion: Dave (Lori) Wilkinson of Temecula, CA; Jack (Terri) Wilkinson of Cary, NC; Cindy (Steve) Carden of Franklin, TN; and Sue (Brian) Jerd of
Soddy Daisy, TN.
A proud veteran, Tom served his country honorably in the Korean War. After returning home, he poured his energy into building a meaningful life filled with family, music, and service. He was a longtime and faithful member of Burks United Methodist Church in Hixson, TN, where he was known for his warm smile, steadfast faith, and generous spirit.
Music was a lifelong passion for Tom which was passed down through generations of Wilkinsons. He volunteered at summer band camps, teaching brass to beginning music students well into his 80s. His dedication to music education and mentoring young musicians brought him immense joy and left a lasting impact on countless students.
Tom had a green thumb and a love for gardening, found beauty in music, and was always ready with a joke or a tale. His sense of humor was infectious, and his storytelling made him the heart of every gathering. Above all, he was known for his unwavering willingness to help others. Whether you were family, friend, neighbor, or stranger-he was someone you could count on.
Tom cherished his role as "Papa" to his beloved grandchildren-Matt (Celeste) Kelly, Ashlyn Kelly, Autumn Jerd, and Aaron Jerd -and his great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Kelly, who brought him immeasurable joy. Tom was an avid supporter of their extracurricular activities, always present in the stands, the audience, or the crowd-cheering them on with pride. Whether it was a game, recital, fundraiser, or performance, "Papa" was there.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Dawn Wilkinson, and his siblings: Dawn (Bill) Dornbos, Dick (Betty) Wilkinson, Bob (Patricia) Wilkinson Jr., Roger (Donna) Wilkinson, Joe (Donna) Wilkinson, and brother-in-law Bob DeVries.
In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, he is survived by his sister, LucyAnn DeVries of St. Joseph, MI, and a large, loving extended family of nieces and nephews who adored his warmth, wisdom, and wit.
