Timothy W. Sorenson passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 21, 2025, after a long battle with cancer. He was 79.
Born on February 21, 1946, in Omaha, NE, to William and Dj Sorenson, Tim was the middle sibling to two sisters, Burma and Elizabeth (Beth}. As a child and young man, Tim was a dedicated student and industrious worker. From a young age, he had countless jobs, which included buying pistachios in bulk, repackaging them and selling door to door. He graduated from Omaha Central High School and then attended Creighton University in Omaha for a year.
The son of a World War II and Korean War Veteran, he accepted a ROTC scholarship from The University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. While at Miami, a proud achievement was being tapped to become a member of the Iron Arrow Honor Society. Tim completed the requirements for graduation and received his BA in English Literature. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Tim served with honor and valor in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. As a Captain in Vietnam, he was in charge of a mechanized artillery company in the Fifth Field Artillery Regiment. Specializing in caravan support and fire base security for the first infantry division, Tim's units saw some of the worst the war had to offer, experiences that stayed with him throughout the rest of his life.
Upon returning, Tim pursued a law degree from Southern Methodist University, planting roots in
Dallas, Texas-a city he would call home for the rest of his life. It was there, in 1973, that he met Marie, his beloved wife of nearly 50 years. Though he often joked about her culinary shortcomings, he never doubted her unwavering loyalty, and together they built a home full of laughter, compassion, and resilience.
Tim practiced law with integrity and heart, often accepting pro bono work. He had a deep commitment to sobriety, having been sober for 45 years at the time of his passing. Well respected in the AA community, and a devoted member of Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers, he mentored countless individuals on their paths to recovery. His home was a haven for many, especially young people with nowhere else to turn.
He found immense joy outdoors, spending countless weekends camping, hunting, and fishing with his family. These trips were often filled with chaos, questionable decision-making, and lots of laughter-from bb gun mishaps to hatchet-related injuries, all of which tested his patience and strengthened family bonds.
Tim was an insatiable reader; a passion inherited from his parents and reflected in his own extensive library. Even in his final days, he could be found on the patio with a cigar in one hand and a well-worn book in the other (sometimes the same book for the third or fourth time).
Tim was preceded in death by his parents, William and Dj Sorenson; his brother-in-law, Elwyn Kroger; and his niece, Tara Kroger.
He is survived by his loving wife Marie; his children Todd (Page), Dax (Corinne), Megan, and Tyler (Betsy); his grandchildren Jegan, Keegan, Berkley, Clara, Evans (Evie), Charles (Charlie), and Conner; and his great-granddaughter, Lilly. He is also survived by his sisters Burma and Beth, and Beth's children, Bonnar and Isha and their families.
Tim Sorenson lived with faith-- he knew there was a God, and he was not it-- humor, humility, and fierce love and loyalty. He will be deeply missed and joyfully remembered.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Sheeran-Crowley Trust which serves both substance use and mental health needs of Texas lawyers.
