Tommie Lynn Buchanan, 86, of
Rowlett, Texas, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 14, 2025. He was born on March 26, 1939, in Sulphur Springs, Texas, to Kitty and Andrew Buchanan.
Tommie grew up in Garland, Texas, graduating from Garland High School in the spring of 1957. Soon after, he answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Navy on September 1, 1957. On April 22, 1960, he married the love of his life, Elon. Together they built a marriage anchored in faith and love, and were blessed with two daughters, Terri Lynn and Kecia Elon, who became the pride and joy of their lives.
In 1962, Tommie began what would become a nearly five-decade career in law enforcement and criminal justice, serving the state of Texas until 2010. Over the years, he held roles of great responsibility and leadership, including Chief, Interim Chief, and Captain. He was known for his steady hand, fairness, and unwavering dedication to justice and the safety of his communities.
Following his service in law enforcement, Tommie continued to serve - this time within the church, leading its security ministry. His watchful care ensured that God's house remained a safe place for worship and fellowship, and he saw this role as both a calling and a privilege.
Most importantly, Tommie was a man who loved and revered the Lord deeply. His life reflected his Savior in word and deed, and he found joy in sharing the hope of the Gospel with others.
Tommie is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Elon; his daughters, Terri Lynn McKinney and husband John, and Kecia Elon Boulton and husband Steve; his two beloved grandsons, J.C. McKinney and wife Abby Sue, and Jackson McKinney and wife Brittany; his four adored great-grandchildren, Parker, Tripp, Tillie, and Adeline; his dear sister, Betty Parker; and many other loved relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Clara Mae Buchanan and Fay Ferguson; and his brothers Joe Bob Buchanan, Jack Buchanan, and Richard Buchanan.
The family rejoices in knowing that Tommie is now in the presence of his Savior, and they find comfort in the promise of John 14:2–3: "In my Father's house are many rooms… I go to prepare a place for you… that where I am you may be also."
