"Loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother & sister"
Velma (Amatruda) Petto, 94, of Waterbury, went to her heavenly home on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at St. Mary's Hospital with her family by her side. As we mourn her loss, we are grateful she is with the Lord, seeing her loved ones who have gone before her.
Velma was born in Waterbury on April 24, 1929, daughter of the late Assunta (Scanipecco) and Francisco Amatruda. She was married to the late Frank Petto, was one of eight siblings, and is survived by her sister, Ann Zotto of Waterbury.
Velma was an accomplished hair stylist and was the owner of Velma's Salon, where she enjoyed all of her clients and developed great relationships. After retirement, she worked at Freihoffer's Thrift Store and later as a demonstrator at Costco. She loved to work in all the gardens around her complex and took great pride in keeping all the community spaces beautiful. She would chuckle when people would drive by and ask her if she worked professionally as a gardener.
Her greatest joy was cooking and spending time with her family, along with her two cats, Maisy and Daisy. She loved Sunday dinner with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and friends.
Velma leaves behind her daughters, Valerie Moura and her husband Tony of Thomaston, and Stephanie Petto of Tampa, FL. She also leaves behind her grandsons, Marc Moura (Eve) of Boston, Nicholas Moura (Violetta) of Newington, CT, her step grandchildren, Anthony (Stacy) Moura, Carrie (Adam) Moura, Bret Moura, Oliver Lukin, and her great grandchildren, Vienna, Maeve, Wes, Gage, and Sloan.
The family thanks the special caregivers that loved her and took wonderful care of her while she was able to live at home. Thank you for all your help and support, Denise, Dina, Racquel, Paula and Yazmine. Love you! A special thanks to all her neighbors, especially Carol and Kathy for providing love and friendship.
Arrangements: A calling hour for Velma will be held on Friday, August 18, 2023 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. at Chase Parkway Memorial/Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow the calling hour at 11:00 a.m. at Mary Mother of the Church Parish/SS. Peter & Paul Church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
