Verd Rumfield Jr., 87, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on December 11, 2024, in
Grand Ledge, Michigan. Born on February 9, 1937, in Charlotte, Michigan, Verd's life was a testament to the enduring power of love, generosity, and service to others.
A graduate of Sunfield High School's class of 1955, Verd's strong work ethic was evident from an early age, extending through his work on the family farm. His career as a dedicated millwright spanned over three decades at Fisher Body, where he was known for his skill and reliability. Verd's commitment to his country was equally steadfast, as he honorably served in the United States Army in the first unit to be deployed to Inchon, S, Korea as Peacekeepers after Cessation of Hostilities.
Verd is survived by his wife, Margaret "Meg" (Wise) Rumfield; daughter, Valerie (Christopher) Wright, and son, Michael (Cathy) Rumfield; stepson, Dr. David (Jennifer Kuhlman) Christy; grandson, Sean Rumfield, and granddaughter, Krista (Jason) Wells.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Verd and Anna (Mallory) Rumfield Sr.; his first wife, Sally Rumfield (VanGansbeke); his brother, Robert Rumfield; and sister, Elizabeth Rumfield (Hunt).
Verd's enthusiasm for life was infectious, and he found great pleasure in traveling across the country with his wife Meg, exploring National Parks, railroad museums, attending county fairs, local plays and music concerts and making lasting memories with Meg. His spirit of volunteerism shone brightly as he dedicated time as a transporter for the American Cancer Society, helping those in need with warmth and compassion. He also served as a Deacon at First Presbyterian Church of Lansing where he visited the homebound, drove homebound people to medical and other appointments, helped provide food baskets for those with food insecurities, helped with building and grounds chores, assisted with maintenance and upkeep of the sanctuary, and donated many small items need by the congregation. In his typical manner, Verd's favorite role as a deacon was greeting people as they entered the building, assisting handicapped members to their seats, and making them comfortable.
Perhaps one of his most beloved roles was that of Santa Claus, a part he played for 30 years. Verd's portrayal of Saint Nick brought joy and wonder to countless children and adults alike, embodying the true spirit of Christmas-giving, merriment, and love.
