Verna Carolina (Bohl) Preuss Huiting was born February 1, 1928 at her parents' farm northwest of Phillipsburg, Kansas to Carl and Martha (Klotz) Bohl. She passed away August 7, 2023 at the age of 95 at her home northeast of Stuttgart, Kansas.
Verna was baptized and confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church located west of Stuttgart. She attended and graduated from the Skunk Creek Country School in Phillips County.
On June 19, 1945 Verna was united in marriage to Michael Fred Preuss at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Stuttgart by Pastor Edwin E. Berner. They made their home northeast of Stuttgart on the family farm. To this union three children were born: Darrell, Velma, and Eldon. While raising their children, Verna also took on the role of farmer while her husband Michael worked for the Railroad. Verna enjoyed farm life. Even after Michael's passing on December 13, 1987, she continued to take care of her cattle with her Farmall tractor until she was 88 years old. With winter approaching, she decided it was time to finally sell the last of her cows. Although her cattle were gone, she still remained busy. One could find her gardening, canning, or mowing. Those were activities she continued to enjoy until the age of 94. Once Verna and Michael's children were grown, she began to bake and decorate cakes. The cakes could be a birthday cake or an extravagant wedding cake. They were all beautiful and delicious. During this time she also enjoyed quilting. The quilts she made ranged from small doll quilts up to large bed quilts.
January 8, 1994 Verna married Bertus Duane Huiting. They both continued to manage their farms, splitting their time between Downs and Stuttgart. In their free time before they were married, you could find them enjoying many polka dances. After marriage, they simply enjoyed the polka music from home. Even in her last days, Verna enjoyed listening to the Mollie B. Polka Show and the Daniel O'Donnell Show while she worked her puzzles.
Verna was preceded in death by her first husband Michael Preuss, parents Carl and Martha Bohl, brother Ervin Bohl and wife Gertrude, sister Dorothy Seipp and husband George, and step-son James Huiting.
Verna is survived by her husband Duane Huiting of Osborne, Ks; sons Darrell Preuss and wife Sandra of Norton, Ks and Eldon Preuss and wife Sandi of Stuttgart, Ks; daughter Velma Jansonius and husband David of Prairie View, Ks; step-sons Stan Huiting of Downs, Ks and Briand Huiting and wife Minda of Downs, Ks; step-daughters Tava Collins of Cheyenne, Wy and Nancy Wilfahrt and husband Dave of Downs, Ks; brother Raymond Bohl and wife Gerline of Phillipsburg, Ks; sister Iona Sidman and husband Warren of Stuttgart, Ks.
