A funeral Mass celebrating the life of Mrs. Vernita Fontenot O’Pry, 88, of Monroe, LA, will be held at 10:00AM Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church with Rev. John Paul Crispin officiating under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Rd. Monroe. Interment will follow in Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00PM until 7:00PM Monday, January 13, 2025, with a Vigil Wake Service at 7:00 PM at the funeral home. 

Vernita was born in Duralde, LA and graduated from Mamou High School in 1954. In 1956 she married her high school sweetheart Norman O’Pry . They celebrated 57 years of marriage before Norman’s death in 2011.

She was office manager for the medical practice of Dr. Sol I. Courtman for 33 years until her retirement . 

Vernita and Norman belonged to Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Monroe. She was active in the Altar Society, St. Vincent de Paul Soup Mission, and served as a Eucharistic Minister.

Her greatest joy was her family. She was a loving wife, Mother, Grandmother and proud Great Grandmother who provided a home filled with Christian education , holiday traditions, and a welcoming place for her children’s friends. She enjoyed her volunteer work, gardening, fishing , and reading.

She was preceded in death by her husband Norman A. O’Pry, Sr,; Parents :Clarence and Mazie Fontenot ; Siblings : Dorothy Douget, Margaret Coleman, and Clarence Fontenot, Jr. ; In-laws : Andrew and Lorissia O’Pry.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children :Angela Blades (Jerry,Jr) , Brent O’Pry (Margaret), Kenneth O’Pry (Terry), Norman “Chip” O’Pry, Jr. (Cheryl).

Grandchildren: Elizabeth O’Pry, Emily Hatfield (Robert), Ryan O’Pry, Thomas O’Pry, Sean O’Pry (Emiley), Auggie O’Pry, and Mazie O’Pry.

Great Grandchildren: Elliott O’Pry, Claire Hatfield, and Meredith Hatfield.

Pallbearers : Thomas O’Pry, Ryan O’Pry, Sean O’Pry, Auggie O’Pry, Thomas Tharp and Jack Gustafson

Memorials may be made in her memory to St. Vincent DePaul and St.Jude Hospital.
