Dr. Vicente L. Jocson, renowned ophthalmologist, devout Catholic, and long-time Pittsburgh resident, passed away peacefully and in grace on Saturday, July 27, 2024, surrounded by beloved family and friends. He was 92 years of age.
Known as "Itik" or "Vic" by those close to him, Dr. Jocson was born to modest means in the small coastal city of Iloilo in the Western Visayas of the Philippines. Excelling at scholastics from a very young age, he eventually achieved enrollment at the prestigious University of the Philippines College of Medicine, thus beginning his lifelong pursuit and practice of the healing arts.
His burgeoning career quickly carried him from the shores of the Philippines to both coasts of America where he found work as a highly sought-after physician and researcher at Harvard Medical School, Yale University, and the University of California San Francisco, his journey ultimately leading him to his position as a university medical professor and chief of glaucoma at the Eye and Ear Institute of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he remained until his retirement.
His many patients remember him as a kind, selfless, charismatic, and attentive physician who left no detail of their cases unturned. While his students recall an insightful and genial mentor who always offered his most to each and every one of them, attested to by the multiple Clinical Instructor of the Year awards honored to him over the years.
For his family, he will endure as a bold and courageous husband, father, and guide who gave them his love and his life.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 4th from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. at the WEDDELL-AJAK FUNERAL HOME, 100 Center Ave. Aspinwall. A Catholic funeral mass will be held at Christ the King Parish, St. Joseph Church, 342 Dorseyville Road, O'Hara Twp. on Monday, August 5th at 10 a.m. The family welcomes all in love and friendship.
