Victor Michael Martynow was born on June 2, 1935, in Chauny, France. He loved being a Frenchman but was fiercely proud of his Ukrainian heritage. He fondly recalled celebrating and serving homemade tomato soup to the American soldiers who liberated his town in 1944, never dreaming that America would become home. He moved to Canada as a teenager and attended McGill University, where he studied biochemistry and graduated in 1959. It was in Montreal that he met his match and the love of his life, Huguette. They married in 1965 and moved to Hawaii in 1970, where they would go on to build their own house, business, and life as they raised their four children. They spent thirty-six years living and working in tropical paradise before finally settling down in Texas to enjoy their hard-earned retirement.
Victor was industrious to his core, a hard-working man who took pride in the things he built. As a child, he dreamt of being a contractor or a woodworker like his father. And although life took him in a different direction, he never lost that love of doing things with his hands. It was this drive that led him to build the family house himself, from foundation to roof, a worthy feat that few can claim. The example he set is carried on by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who will greatly miss his words of wisdom and love.
Though he was afflicted with leukemia, he was always a fighter, and it was this strength of spirit that allowed him to persevere far longer than doctors had predicted. After a lengthy battle, he finally succumbed to a broken heart following the death of his beloved wife and left this world to join her on November 13, 2025.
There will be a memorial Mass in his honor at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Austin, TX, at 10:00 AM on Friday, December 12, 2025. An interment will follow immediately afterward at Our Lady of the Rosary Cemetery.
