Victor Williams Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Nov. 25 to Nov. 26, 2010.
WILLIAMS, Victor Jean, of Chester, Va., cherished son, husband, father and coach, passed away on November 20, 2010 after facing an opponent he could not defeat, renal cell carcinoma. Vic was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, E.J. "Kelly" Williams and Mary Saunders Williams. His legacy will be remembered by his parents, E.J. and Lois Williams; high school sweetheart and wife, Lyn Webber Williams; children, Dr. Cory Williams (Katie), Kelly Jean Williams, Jeffrey Hinchey, Tony Hinchey (Cindy) and "middle son" William Henderson (Brie); brother, Todd Williams; sister-in-law, Cindy P. Williams; nephew, Peden; and niece, Addie; grandchildren, Sean, Brandon, Aurelio, Will, Jaiden and (soon-to-be-born) Trotter; and his beloved dogs, Casey and Houston. Vic is also survived by loving cousins and in-laws. Following a period of self-employment in the lumber business, Vic found his passion in coaching and teaching young people. Vic attended Bridgewater College and completed his education at Virginia State University so that he could teach and coach. His coaching experience included the first C.C. Wells Senior football team, L.C. Bird junior varsity and varsity teams, Vance County High School varsity team, and a cherished four years as head football coach of the Goochland High School Bulldogs. In 1987, Vic was able to attain the one job he truly wanted, head football coach and teacher at his alma mater, Thomas Dale High School. He served as head football coach and teacher for 23 years. On December 12, 2009, he achieved his ultimate career goal of winning a State Championship. Among his often-noted achievements, which included seven regional championships and coaching NFL athletes William Henderson, Ken Oxendine, Rudi Johnson and Ricky Hall, Vic was most proud of the over 100 college scholarships awarded to athletes he coached. A celebration of Vic's life will be held on January 3, 2011 at 3 p.m. in the Thomas Dale High School auditorium. In keeping with Vic's dislike of wearing ties, dress will be casual, and wearing your team football jersey is encouraged. Memorial contributions may be made to the Coach Vic Williams Scholarship Fund, c/o Daniels and Morgan, P.O. Box 3570, Chester, Va. 23831. Special love and gratitude are extended to Jennifer and Ben Brockwell, Dr. Terry and Jean Webber, Dr. Kirk Ways, Nancy and Warren Jessup, Terry Burt, the Ladies of the Knight, the Thomas Palliative Care staff at VCU/MCV Massey Cancer Center and the generously supportive faculty and staff of Thomas Dale High School. "No one should get paid and have as much fun as you do." Love, "My Girl" Lyn

Lyn,My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Eventhough I have been out of the area since 1987, I have been able to keep up with Vic and Thomas Dale to some degree. It is obvious that he had become as beloved and respected as Coach Karpus had been for those of us who played for him...that's the highest compliment I can offer. My grandmother always left us with this wish as I do to you and yours..."May the Lord bless you all real good." A.J. Sligh

Lyn, While we have been far from Thomas Dale, our friends and teammates we have always followed what was going on with Vic. I was elated to hear that he finally won the State Championship that we had chased for so long. The news last week that he was gone was a real shock. Vic leaves a great legacy for any coach or player who follows him. We'll all miss him on the sideline. Vic was a very lucky man to have you with him. Our prayers are with you and your family.

Lyn,I have thought of you often and followed Thomas Dale football news. I am proud that I can say I once knew the great coach Vic Williams when he was just a teenager! I work at the Veterans Administration and often discuss TDHS football, and the fact that I went to school with Vic and you, with veterans that call from Chester and surrounding counties we competed with in sports. I was very saddened to just learn of Vic's illness. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family. I think of your parents and brothers often and of your Dad every Ground Hog's Day, on his birthday. Nancy Bland

Lyn, We are thinking of you and your family, in these saddest of times. He was a remarkable man, teacher, and coach. It goes without saying that it was a pleasure to call him our colleague and our dearest friend. We will miss him terribly, but think of him fondly and remember the laughs we all once shared. He will always have a place in our hearts and in our "department."
