Victoria Gong Obituary
Victoria Wei Gong of Ellicott City, Maryland, a loving wife, devoted mother, daughter, and sister, passed away from late-stage cancer on July 3, 2024. She was surrounded by her loving husband and children at Jiahui International Hospital in Shanghai, China.
Victoria was born on June 15, 1970, in Yunnan Province, China, to her father, Gong Bojie, and her mother, Li Xiurong. She was the second child in the family.
In 1988, Victoria was admitted to the Foreign Languages Department of Yunnan University, majoring in English. She married her husband, Andre Gao, in December 1991 and moved to the United States in the summer of 1992. There, she earned her master's degree in business administration from Southeastern University in 1997 and obtained her Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certificate in 1998. Throughout her career, she worked as an accountant and auditor for several companies in the U.S. and Hong Kong. After the birth of her second child, she stayed home full-time to raise her children.
During the last twenty years, Victoria Gong battled mental illness and had multiple hospitalizations due to her condition. In 2014, her mental illness nearly took her life, causing her to fall into a week-long coma and endure an extended hospital stay to recover. After this brush with death, her faith in Jesus Christ grew stronger. Despite the strong side effects of her medication, such as severe headaches and elevated levels of blood sugar and cholesterol, her faith in Christ helped her maintain her medication regimen and achieve better control of her mental illness for the rest of her life.
Despite her many struggles, Victoria always had love and generosity in her heart, devoting much of her time and effort to raising her three children. She was wholeheartedly happy and positive, always showing love, kindness, and joy to those around her. After 2014, she felt a personal calling to evangelize and testify to the joy and peace she found in God, gave testimonies on many occasions. In 2020, she joined an online Chinese mental health support group, gave testimonies online, and helped others cope with their mental illness through faith in Christ.
In June 2024, while on a family vacation in China, Victoria experienced frequent dizziness and headaches. A visit to the hospital led to the discovery of advanced cancer that had metastasized to her brain. Despite the frightening prognosis, she remained courageous and at peace. She expressed to her family and friends that if it was God's will for her to go to heaven, she would be more than happy to go. She preached the gospel and shared her faith with the medical staff at the hospital.
Two days after the discovery of her brain tumor, Victoria suffered a seizure due to the sudden worsening of her condition and never woke up again. A week later, on July 3, she peacefully went to heaven. Victoria Gong is survived by her husband, Andre Gao; her sons, Jonathan and Richard; her daughter, Stephanie; her father, Gong Bojie; and her sisters, Grace Mei Gong and Laura Yun Gong.
The viewing and memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at Grace Chinese Christian Church, 6275 Old Washington Road, Elkridge, MD 21075, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm, followed by burial at St. John's Cemetery in Ellicott City.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made via Zelle to [email protected] to fund the construction of a missionary-supported school in Senegal.
