Virginia Helen Estep, 88, formerly of Bluefield passed away peacefully on Monday, November 10, in Morgantown, West Virginia. Born on February 23, 1937, in Bartley, West Virginia, she was the daughter of John and Mae Christian and one of fourteen children.
Helen graduated from Big Creek High School and went on to attend nursing school at Bluefield State College and Wytheville Community College. She dedicated her career to caring for others. She served as a nurse at Bluefield Community Hospital, primarily in the cardiac unit, until her retirement. Her compassion and skill touched countless lives throughout her years of service.
Married to Don Estep for over fifty years, Helen was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved her family deeply and cherished every gathering and reunion. Her adventurous spirit led her to travel abroad, offering healthcare in underserved communities—a testament to her generous heart and global compassion.
Helen found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She was an avid gardener, often found tending to her flowers and trees on sunny days. Her love of music was evident in her enthusiastic participation in church choirs, especially during Christmas and Easter celebrations. She cherished her "mountain" and McDowell County heritage.
She is survived by her children: Frank Estep of Windsor, Colorado; Cathy Anderson of Midland, North Carolina; and Michael Estep of Fairmont, West Virginia. She is also lovingly remembered by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought her immense joy and pride.
A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, November 20, at Greenview United Methodist Church, 600 Blue Prince Road (Green Valley), Bluefield, WV. Visitation will take place from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., followed by a service at 1:00 p.m. and a graveside committal at Monte Vista Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.
Helen’s legacy of love, service, and strength will live on in the hearts of family and all who knew her.
