Wade Gunn, a respected and beloved member of the Jones, Oklahoma community, passed away peacefully at his home on August 29, 2024, at the age of 82. Born on April 8, 1942, in Corpus Christi, Texas, Wade was the youngest of three children born to Leslie Gunn and Ruby (Horn) Gunn.
Wade's early years were spent in Del City before his family moved to their farm in Jones, where his love for the rural lifestyle and hard work began. After graduating from Jones High School in 1960, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army. Stationed in Germany, Wade's service was marked by dedication and a sense of adventure. On January 19, 1962, during a 45-day leave, he married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Jones, in a ceremony at the First United Methodist Church, officiated by his father.
Following his military service, Wade and Sharon settled in Oklahoma City before returning to their roots in Jones. Wade worked various jobs while he pursued a degree from Central State University in education. Once he completed his degree, he began his coaching career in Duncan, Oklahoma. Wade's journey continued as he took on the role of Head Football Coach at Mountain Valley Schools in Saguache, Colorado. His career brought him back to Oklahoma, where he completed his Master's degree at Central State University. Coaching then led him to Luther for three years. He devoted his last 14 years in education to coaching football and track at Carl Albert High School. His impact on his students and athletes was profound, inspiring many through his commitment and leadership.
Beyond his professional life, Wade was deeply devoted to his family and his many interests. He is survived by Sharon, his loving wife of 62 years; his sister Peggy and her late husband Jack; his sister Ann and her husband Bob; his son Barry and his wife Kim; his daughter Cori and her husband Victor; and his grandchildren Katelin and her husband Dan, Garrett and his wife Amanda, Wade and Kira, Karsyn, Cheyann, and Presley. His great-granddaughter Rosealy also carries forward his legacy. Wade is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces, extended family members, countless friends and former students.
Wade's passions extended beyond his professional life. He found joy in traveling, life on the farm, and raising Black Angus cattle with great pride. He was an avid crappie fisherman, enjoyed camping trips, and loved spending time at Lake Eufaula. His shop was a place where he could unwind, "piddling" and working on various projects. Known for his straightforward opinions, Wade's honesty was a defining trait, and his loved ones always knew where they stood with him. Despite his forthrightness, his deep affection for those close to him was always evident.
Services to celebrate Wade's remarkable life will be held at Barnes-Friederich Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at 2pm. Interment to follow at Jones I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Wade Gunn's legacy of dedication, love, and candidness will forever be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace.
