Obituary for Walter Frank Johnsey Sr.
August 4, 1946 – May 15, 2025
Walter Frank Johnsey Sr., age 78, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2025, at his residence.
Walter was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose infectious laugh, steady presence, and unwavering love touched the lives of all who knew him. Born on August 4, 1946, he spent his life grounded in his faith, family, and service to others. His legacy is one of kindness, humility, and deep devotion to those he held dear.
Walter was a proud "Fighting Brownie" of Jones Valley High School in Birmingham, Alabama. He continued his education at Livingston University and went on to earn both a Master of Divinity and a Master of Religious Education from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Answering his call to ministry, Walter faithfully served as pastor at Brookside Baptist Church in Birmingham, Macedonia Baptist Church in Jemison, and Pratt Court Baptist Church in Prattville. Later, he continued to shape young minds as a beloved history teacher at Prattville High School, where he was deeply respected for his knowledge, patience, and compassion.
Walter left this world with true contentment. He often expressed that he had so much more than he ever thought he would. His wife, children, grandchildren, friends, and-most of all-his salvation were the foundation of his peace and fulfillment in life.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Judy McKinney Johnsey; his daughter, Kimberly Johnsey Kelley (Shayne) of Denton, Texas; and his son, Walter Frank Johnsey Jr. (Laurie) of Athens, Alabama. He was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren, whom he affectionately called the "Fearsome Five"-Rocklyn, Kooper, and Addison-Shayne Kelley, and Pratt and Newton Johnsey.
Walter is also survived by his sister, Sandra Johnsey McGuire (Terry); his brother, Lawrence Frank Johnsey Jr. (Grace); brothers-in-law Randy McKinney (Betsy) and Jay McKinney (Chuck); as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Frank Johnsey Sr. and Margie Booth Johnsey; his brothers, Amos Boothe and Jimmy Ray Boothe; his sisters, Mildred Boothe Morris, Betty Booth Armstrong, and Mary Lee Johnsey McMillian; and his parents-in-law, J.E. and Marie McKinney.
He will be remembered for his warm heart, thoughtful advice, and the countless ways he supported and uplifted those around him. His life was a true reflection of generosity, faith, and quiet strength.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at Grace Life Baptist Church, located at 5911 Old Tuscaloosa Hwy, McCalla, Alabama, officiated by Bro. Dennis Dunn. Visitation begins at 2 p.m., with the service to follow at 3 p.m. Following the service, all are invited to stay for a time of sharing memories and enjoying all his favorite foods.
Walter Frank Johnsey Sr. will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to guide and inspire all who were blessed to know him.
