Known as Warren or Doc to his family and friends, he lived a life of medical service, intellectual pursuits, and community service. Having built a community in each of his broad range of interests and groups, he leaves many friends behind.
Warren was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on April 10, 1931 to Dr. Warren David Long and Ona Mae McAllister. He attended high school at Kemper Military School in Booneville, Missouri, and attended Baylor University for his undergraduate studies. Warren continued his education at the University of Oklahoma, earning a Master's degree in Bacteriology. He began work on his Ph.D. in Microbiology at Tulane University in 1958, before returning to the University of Oklahoma to enter medical school, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1963. Fascinated with Neurosurgery since he witnessed a craniotomy in high school, he selected this area as his specialty and completed his Neurosurgery Residency at Vanderbilt University working under William Meachum, M.D.
Warren settled in Shreveport, Louisiana and established a Neurosurgery practice here in 1970. Throughout the years, he held many leadership roles in the medical community, taught at Louisiana State University Medical School, and was very active in multiple Neurosurgical Societies across the country including the Meachum Neurosurgical Society. He served with the National Advisory Council on the National Health Services Corps under President Reagan 1980-1985. After 35 years, Warren retired from practicing medicine but continued to find great fellowship in his later years with his fellow physicians, regularly meeting over lunch.
Devoted to the Shreveport community as well as the arts, Warren became involved in multiple local institutions and community groups, including and The English Speaking Union where he served as Past President and remained actively involved. As an avid supporter of the arts, he was a long-time member of the Opera National Council, The Southwestern Hospitality Board of the Metropolitan Opera, and the Shreveport Art Guild. Through-out his life in Shreveport, Warren attended St Mark's Episcopal Church, and found his participation with the St Mark's community especially meaningful.
Warren was an enthusiastic sportsman, enjoying golf, fly fishing, deep-sea fishing and- later in life -snow skiing. He looked forward to fishing trips to Montana as well as the gulf coast.
He liked travel, wine, and entertaining. French wine and cuisine were among his favorites and he was an early member of the Shreveport chaptres of the de la Confreriedes Chevaliers du Testevin, and the Confrerie de la Chaine des Rotisseurs.
Throughout his life, Warren was intellectually curious and a lifelong learner. His interests ranged from spiritual topics to all facets of history. As a member of the Ben Franklin Philosophical Society, Tarshar, for over 30 years, he researched and delivered numerous papers. He also gave several lectures at Louisiana State University Shreveport on historical figures such as Will Rogers, Charles Lindberg, and Winston Churchill, the last having been a speaker he had heard while a student at Kemper, where he was member of the ECHO Company.
