CWO4 Warren I. Paul, USMCR (Ret.) 1/1/1931 to 11/10/2022
Born in Washington, DC on January 1st, 1931, to LtCol Albert W. Paul (USMC, Ret.) and Bernice L. Paul, the family "shipped out" for China when Warren was 3 months old. Warren spent the first 7 years of his life in Shanghai, China, and learned to speak fluent Chinese. His natural talent for languages served him well, as by age 9, he could speak 3 languages fluently, and later in life that expanded to 6 languages, and he could read & write 4 of those. He and his mother were sent back to the states in 1939 when the conflict with the Japanese was inevitable.
Very precocious, Warren excelled in his studies and graduated from High School at Fishbourne Military academy at age 15. He matriculated to Rutgers University in Fall 1948, attended for 2.5 years, then enlisted in the Marine Corps. He served as combat infantryman/rifleman in Korea and was a member of the Marine Corps Rifle team at the Southeast Division Rifle Matches in November 1953, where he earned a Bronze Distinguished Shooter medal. Honorably discharged in January 1954, he returned to Rutgers and finished his BA degree, then re-enlisted in the Corps.
Over the following 18 years, the Marines put his language skills to use in various intelligence and interrogator/ translator billets, where he excelled. During this time, he also earned his Masters at Keen College, was promoted to Warrant Officer, and eventually earned his Ph.D. from Ohio State University. He transferred to the USMC Reserve in 1972, and stayed in the Reserves (with a couple brief Active duty stints) until his retirement as a CWO4 in November 1988.
He had two children (David & Brice Paul) with his first wife, Barbara, who predeceased him in 2018. He had no children with his 2nd wife, Nancy, who lives in California.
After retiring from the Corps, Warren became an armed security guard, and worked for Airborne Security for 12 years, becoming the Captain of the Guard and Chief Training Officer. He met his third wife, Jayne, while she was working for Airborne.
Starting in 2004, he served 2 terms as President of the Lake Clarke Gardens Condominium Association.
He joined the General A.A. Vandegrift Detachment of the Marine Corps League as a Life Member in 1997 and was very active with the League until 2020, when Covid shut everything down.
He is survived by his wife, Jayne Paul, his sons David and Brice Paul, and two grandchildren, Adam and Miles Paul.
There will not be a viewing, but a Graveside Service will be held at Lake Worth Memory Gardens, 3041 Kirk Road, Lake Worth, FL 33461 at 11:00 am on Friday, 2 Dec 2022.
In lieu of flowers, any donations should be given to the General A.A. Vandegrift Detachment of the Marine Corps League.
