In Loving Memory of Wayne Brewer
The world has dimmed with the passing of a wonderful man, husband, friend, dad and Gumps. Wayne passed peacefully, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease, in the "big room" of his home where he grew up and resided the past 32 years. On this solemn day, we bid farewell to a man whose name will echo through eternity in his family, his church and circles of friends-a man of unparalleled humor, kindness and strength. He was more than a leader; he was a guiding light. He loved his family, his friends, and his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with everything he had.
Born in
Longview, Texas to Bill and Aline Brewer on August 10, 1953. Wayne had one older brother, Ben Brewer. The Brewers lived and breathed golf. Wayne loved to hunt, fish, play and watch golf, football and basketball. Wayne graduated from Pine Tree High School where he was on the golf team and was crowned Mr. Pine Tree and Most Handsome. He then went on to Baylor University where he earned a degree in Business. He made life-long friends at Baylor along the way. Wayne worked in insurance sales, computer sales, and co-owned a Jucy's Hamburger store with lifelong friend Ronnie Maxey before returning to what he loved the most, golf. Wayne never met a stranger and was well known for being the King of Barter. He also, for some reason, was always given free stuff everywhere he went.
Wayne married the love of his life, Vickie Neeley Brewer, in July of 1979. They have two children, Barry and Brittany, and 5 grandsons. Wayne loved being Gumps to his 5 perfect grandsons, Beckham, Brennan, Barret, Grayson and Brooks. Wayne ran and loved Woodhollow Golf Course since it opened on September 11, 1991, then he and Vickie bought the course in 2006. He loved his golfers, his faithful team of workers and really loved to mow the various types of grass on the course. Wayne had perfect attendance at First Baptist Church for years. He loved to sing, dance, and eat at hole-in-the-wall restaurants (that sometimes scared Vickie) and was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan. He could be found in his free time watching Gunsmoke, Andy Griffith or golf tournaments.
Wayne is surpassed in death by his father, Bill Brewer, mother Aline Brewer, brother Ben Brewer and numerous close friends. He is survived by his wife, Vickie Brewer, son Barry Brewer and wife Lauren and grandsons Beckham, Brennan, Barrett, his daughter Brittany Brewer Garland and husband Chase and his grandsons Grayson and Brooks. He's survived by his brother-in-law, Jimmy Neeley, who was always like a brother to him, and Jimmy's wife, Becky Neeley. He is survived by his niece Whitney Eichinger, Rhett Brewer and Ross Brewer and several cousins. Wayne was loved in his community and leaves behind a powerful legacy and endless stories among his family and friends. He led not with power but with purpose, not with might but with mercy. He spoke in words that healed, in actions that uplifted, and in a presence that made all who knew him or even strangers feel seen, cared for, and valued. Whether through a quiet gesture of generosity or a simple moment of shared happiness, he made the world a better place. He loved deeply, forgave easily, and gave selflessly. His family was his greatest treasure, and his friends were lucky to call him their own.
Though his body may rest and be renewed by his Father, his spirit here will never fade. It lives in the kindness he showed, the lives he touched, and the indelible mark he left on this world. As he joined his Father in Heaven, he heard the words, "My good and faithful servant you have fought the good fight."
So, we do not say goodbye. We say thank you. Thank you for your light, your love, your incredible humor, your legacy. Thank you for showing us what it means to be great, to be a hard worker, to laugh often and to love one another. Our family also wants to say thank you so much for our loving village of friends that walked this journey with us..we will forever be overwhelmed by your caring hands.
Rest now knowing your story will never end.
