Wayne Ray Doman (85), of Murray, Utah, passed away April 26, 2025 from a fast-moving, aggressive pancreatic cancer.
Wayne was born to James Chandler Doman and Leona Stowell April 13, 1940 in Denver, Colorado, the second of five children. His parents modeled for him a strong moral code and a love for the Savior, which he adopted as his own. Wayne was a graduate of East High School in Denver, Colorado (1958). He served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Eastern States Mission. Upon his return he got his Bachelor of Social Sciences from Colorado State University. Shortly after that he met and married his princess, Janice Edith Christiansen on March 19, 1964 in the Salt Lake Temple. Wayne received his Master of Religious Education from BYU. He and Jan lived in Ammon, Idaho, and Spanish Fork, Utah, before settling in Murray, Utah.
Wayne dedicated his life to teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ and instilling his love for our Savior and His atoning sacrifice. He taught Seminary and Institute in the Church Education System for 45 years. Along with some friends, he started the Seminary Media Department for the Church, where he made film strips and took photos in Israel and Egypt to aid teachers with their lessons. He taught at LDS Business College (now Ensign College) and Salt Lake Community College. He and Jan moved to San Jose, California in 2000 to be the Institute Director of San Jose State until he retired in 2005.
Wayne & Jan served a CES mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Johannesburg, South Africa where they worked with Seminary and Institute teachers. It was truly an adventure of a lifetime. Later they served a local mission at the LDS Employment Center. Aside from these two missions, he served in various other callings, including the Scouting program, Branch President, Bishop (twice), Patriarch, and temple worker.
Wayne was a believer in doing things right. He set a high standard for himself that showed in his church service, as well as his hobbies. He was an adept photographer of both people and nature. It was a familiar sight to see him with a camera in his face, whether it was for business or pleasure. He was also a carpenter and handyman extraordinaire, adding rooms to his home for his growing family of seven children, and building furniture or anything Jan wanted made. He loved serving others and gave of his time freely.
He was a landscaper, rule keeper, Eagle Scout, thoughtful gift giver, avid reader, scriptorian, and a man of integrity and honor who cherished his wife. He enjoyed root beer floats, popcorn, family history, doing temple work, and working and relaxing at the family cabin. And he was an incredible father who left behind a legacy of posterity who try to honor his name.
Wayne is survived by his wife Jan, his brother Alan (Debby), sisters DeAnna Hansen and Linda Bishop (Larry); 7 children: Scott (Kim), Suzanne Miller (Rick), Leslie Nelson (Eric), Natalie Gehl (Rodger Smith), Jackie Doman Peoples (Rob), Carrie Stone (Michael), Stephanie Chatterton (Paul); 24 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his brother Robert Thomas Doman, brother-in-law Gary Hansen, great grandson Beckham James Doman, and son-in-law Randy Gehl.
A viewing will be held for Wayne on Sunday, May 4th from 5-7 pm and again Monday, May 5th from 10:30 to 11:30 am with services at 12:00 pm, both at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints church building at 6410 South 725 East, Murray, Utah, 84107. Interment will be at the Murray City Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to BYU Pathways, an education program that Wayne believed in.

Such a humble man full of so much love and wisdom! I will never forget how kindly he approached me after I spoke in the 6th ward for the very first time, asking me if I´d share my notes with him. He was the stake patriarch at the time, and had a lifetime more of study and experience than I had! And yet he was always seeking to learn and grow in his understanding of the Savior and His gospel, even from humble, weaker sources such as myself.
I will miss hearing his deep, gentle voice imparting words of wisdom in our Sunday School lessons, and our positive exchanges on the curbside of his home as he worked in his beautiful yard. In his own quiet, humble way he has left me, and all who came across his path, better for the time he spent here on earth.
All our love and prayers to you, Jan, during this difficult time of separation. Even amidst sorrowing, may we rejoice all the more in knowing that through our Savior Jesus Christ you will be reunited with your beloved husband again in the eternities.
Love,
Caitlin and Trevor DeMass and Family

You were quite patient with my family and me, even when I was an inactive member of the LDS church. I appreciated the fact that you never gave up on me. I shall always remember your kindness and patience. You are a true treasure and Heaven is more enriched, with your presence there... rest in peace, Bishop.

Hi Jan & Family - I was honored Wayne joined me his first cousin in co-authoring the family document we prepared on Alfred Cordon our common 3rd grandfather. The documentation he provided was very helpful. He was a great cousin and will be missed.

Jan and family,
Annette and I add our condolences at hearing if the passing of Wayne. I was just now informed by a long-time friend, Dave Richins, who served as our Supervising Elder in Harrisburg Pa. in 1960, when Wayne and I were young missionaries. With you at his side, Wayne has certainly touched thousands of lives since, including ours as we worked with you in assignments in Utah, California, and in Africa.
Our love, Mark and Annette Orton
