Wayne Matthews, 55, of Saluda, passed away on Thursday, August 28, 2025. Born and raised in Saluda, he was the son of the late Virginia Proctor Autry and the grandson of the late Shelton and May Watson Proctor.
Wayne was a 1988 graduate of Wardlaw Academy. His love for flying began at an early age. At just 14, he started working at the Saluda County Airport and by 16 he had proudly earned his helicopter pilot’s license. Flying became more than a hobby—it was his passion and his career. Wayne was a valued A&P helicopter mechanic, who earned his helicopter rating at Southeast Helicopters. He continued to use his knowledge while serving as a Special Agent/Pilot with SLED for 25 years, earning two Medals of Valor for his courage and dedication. After retiring from SLED, he continued to share his skills and love of aviation through work with the USDA flying helicopters and instructing other law enforcement agencies through George Oliver Enterprises.
When he wasn’t in the air, Wayne enjoyed college football, golf, fishing, working on his beloved “Ponderosa,” and relaxing at Edisto Beach.
Above all, Wayne was a devoted family man. He deeply loved his wife, son, and extended family, and he cherished the coworkers who became like brothers and sisters to him. He will be remembered for his loyalty, sense of humor, and the way he made everyone feel at home.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 33 years, Sherri Wood Matthews; his son, Dylan Wayne Matthews; his bonus daughter, Caroline DuBose; and Dylan’s best friend, River Guy, whom Wayne considered one of his own. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Lisa Wood Thompson (David); nephew, Stuart Thompson (Britney) and their daughters, Addison and Annie; nephew, Derek Thompson (Lindsey) and their son, Tyler. In addition to his mother and grandparents, Wayne was preceded in death by his uncle, Wayne Shelton Proctor.
A memorial service to celebrate Wayne’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 11, at the Saluda County Airport, 180 Saluda Airport Road, Saluda, SC 29138, with Rev. Burton Campbell officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Wayne’s service will also be livestreamed for friends and family who cannot be with us in person by visiting https://www.facebook.com/saludahighschoolsaludasc .
To honor Wayne’s memory, donations may be made to “Wayne Matthews’ Charity Fund.” Donations may be mailed to 2508 Kennerly Rd., Irmo, SC 29063. A charity meaningful to the family will be chosen at a later date.
