Wendy Gayle Safford, 53, of Centralia, Illinois, passed away at 3:39 pm September 6, 2025 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri from respiratory complications. She was born November 19, 1971 in Houston, Texas to the late Lawrence and Phyllis (Hayes) Safford.
Wendy is survived by her siblings, Debbie Bacher, Peggy Bacher, Tammy Bartolini and husband, Darren, Renee Nelson and significant other, Zack Mehl, and Audrey (Gregg) Guild; uncles, Donald Hayes and Bill Hayes and wife, Mary; aunt, Dorris Hayes; very dear friends, Laura, Nancy, and Susanne; ; and multiple nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Wendy was preceded in death by her aunt, Sue Hayes; and uncles, J.B. Hayes and Calvin Hayes.
Wendy was well-liked and made friends all over the world. She showed dogs and had a National Champion Chihuahua. She also showed Arabian horses. She worked as a tattoo and piercing artist and was very good with people of all ages. Wendy was always willing to help anyone in need. She will be deeply missed.
A Greeting of Family and Friends will be held Saturday, September 13, 2025 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Newell Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 1:00 pm with Reverend Travis Hayes officiating.
