Wilbert Black III

Wilbert Black, III, born August 31, 1926, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Wilbert and Alice Black, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2025, at the age of 99. He was the loving husband of Mary Martin Black of Maurepas, Louisiana, with whom he shared 75 wonderful years of marriage and three beloved children.

Wilbert proudly served his country as a World War II Veteran in the United States Army. Following his military service, he built a long and dedicated career with the Illinois Central Railroad, working first as a Civil Engineer and later as an Equipment Supervisor. He faithfully served the company for 42 years until his retirement.

A man of deep faith and strong community ties, Wilbert was an active member of Munholland Methodist Church in Metairie, Louisiana, and a member of the VFW in Kenner. He was also an avid golfer and a talented mechanic, who spent much of his retirement joyfully working on cars, lawn equipment, and anything with an engine.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Rodney Black; and his daughter, Linda Fay Black Foster.

Wilbert is survived by his devoted wife, Mary; two sons, Wilbert Keith Black and Gary Rodney Black; and his son-in-law, Ronald Bruce Foster. He leaves behind five grandchildren: Jeremy Black, Brian Trager (Ashley), Caci Black Schlumbrecht (Chris), Chad Michael Black (Lauren), and Cali Jo Black; as well as three great-granddaughters: Lala Zeitoun, Kaisley Schlumbrecht, and Kaylie Black.

The family will receive friends at Munholland Methodist Church on Friday, December 12th, at 10:30 a.m., with a Christian Burial Service to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Munholland Methodist Church in memory of Wilbert Black.
