William Barnes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McMillan-Small Funeral Home & Crematory on Mar. 14, 2026.
William Edward Barnes Sr., 88, passed away on February 22, 2026, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Antonette Barnes; his son, William Barnes; and his cherished grandchildren, William Philip Barnes and Marc Patrick Barnes.

Born on September 10, 1937, in Staten Island, New York, William was a devoted husband, father, and proud grandfather affectionately known by his two grandchildren as "Gramps." He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps as a Lance Corporal and Flamethrower Operator. His time in the Marines reflected the toughness, discipline, and realism he carried with him throughout his life.

Following his military service, he dedicated more than 30 years of his career to the New York City Transit Authority as a train operator, helping move millions of New Yorkers through the city that never sleeps.

To those who knew him best, William was exactly what he appeared to be: a man who spoke his mind and never pretended to be anything other than himself. While he could be stubborn and set in his ways at times, beneath that exterior was a man who cared deeply about the people he loved.

William battled lung complications with determination and strength. Even at 88, he still had his signature salt-and-pepper hair. After leaving hospice care, he courageously fought on for another two years before ultimately losing that battle.

William will be remembered for his strength, his sense of humor, and his determination to live life on his own terms. He enjoyed a cold glass of Pinot Grigio and was a steady presence for those around him. He was a die-hard New York Yankees fan and, interestingly enough, also loved the Dallas Cowboys and the Boston Celtics-quite the combination.

Above all else, he was a proud Marine, a hardworking New Yorker, and most importantly, a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

He will be deeply missed by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

"Fair winds and following seas, Marine."
A traditional naval and Marine Corps blessing expressing gratitude and wishing a safe journey ahead.

Semper Fi, Dad.
